For what reasons or when would a guy call a girl "babe"?

I was talking to this guy and during our conversation, he called me "babe". I didn't really acknowledge it to him but i was surprised he called me that and i really liked being called that!

I once saw this picture that said "If I call you "Babe", you are mine" and some of my friends say that too. like if they call someone "babe" then they are.. i dont know, claiming them? something like that. Is that true for everyone? Maybe when he called me that, it was just for the sake of the conversation (it was a dirty one lol)? Im not too sure...

Anyway, when would a guy call a girl "babe" and why would he decide, all of a sudden, to call her that?

I might do it jokingly with someone who experience has taught me can take it in good humor. I never thought of it as a very special word though, not as one that would claim someone.

In some places people just use it casually. In New Orleans, for instance, people of both genders will use it on girls, and not with a sexual connotation. It doesn't have the import there that it might have elsewhere.

that makes sense! where i currently live, people usually dont casually call each other "babe" and i used to live where he currently resides and people dont say it casually there either. but you never know!

It's not necessary that he will call you babe because he likes you or something. It's just flirty nature of guys who may call you babe or something else. May be you feel strange because you are experiencing something new. But i suggest you to take it casually and lightly.

Look..."babe" doesn't define anything. It may have different perspectives while people or guys use it.
Some people use it casualy and some don't
He may be attracted to you yes... but not necessary that he is seriously in love with you. You might be attractive or may be if he gets chance he will even have sex with you.. But seriously it doesn't have any perfect definition to describe it.

no i understand that completely! for the record, he has stated that he likes me, is attracted to me, and would in fact have sex with me.
"babe" is one of those words that can go either way as far as meaning anything serious but i was curious of how other people saw the word and how they thought about it in this particular scenario

See if he says it to anyone else. If so it means nothing. If only says it to you it might mean something

Okay so like, babe and baby are terms of endearment. Notice how we also call little kids baby? Yeah, when you were 7 your mom prob called you baby. We use terms of endearment on those we care for. Babe and baby is what you'd call someone you look out for, LIKE a baby or small child.
It doesn't have shit to do with wanting to MAKE Babies with that person.
I get called baby by my mom. She doesn't want my babies. I get called that by my grandma and so forth
