What does it mean when he says "I would take a bullet for you"?

My boyfriend of 9 months told me last night during a heartfelt conversation said: "I would take a bullet for you." He looked so sincere and emotional when he told me.

Does that mean he loves me? Was he trying to tell me that he does?

In terms of actions yes - he acts like he does love me. Prior to dating we were also close/best friends for 11 years.

Well, in my opinion, at that time, at least he felt that he loved you. As far as literally take bullet for you, I am not sure. You see, I had a conversation with someone one day about what you consider a good person and he started asking hypothetical questions and I remember thinking that I know the "right" answer but I told him to put me in the situation he asked me for real and I'll tell him (and myself) what I would really do. For whatever it's worth, I must say that don't put much weight on the fact that he said that he would take a bullet for you. Chances are he would not but the tought is what counts. So to answer your question, the answer is YES

Randomsh*t, what are you talking about? I said that to my best friend, she is extremely worried about me because I am joining the Marine Corps, and my girlfriend, also worried for me.

It means he loves you, he cares more about your well-being than his own, he wants you to be happy. Obviously, he doesn't want to get into trouble with a gun fight or anything but if something happened he would do anything to make sure you were safe.
