Gentlemen, why is my guy friend withdrawing from me?

Hello gentleman, hopefully you guys can help me to decipher what my guy friend is thinking right now. Here goes: I'm his high crush since 12 years ago. We got in contact with each other this year. We like each other, but we remain friends because he moved to LA and say that a long distance relationship is not what he's is looking for in a relationship. I respected his decision & wish him luck on his endeavor. We still talk to each other and we talk about moral values, we talk about family, and we lightly flirt with each other, but not crossing over the friendship line. He says he respected me and I respect him. He even kept & fulfilled his promised to me about getting me a burger for my birthday 12 years ago in high school when I visited him for 4 hours. He also kept the present that he was supposed to give me for 12 years too. In 4 days I'm visiting LA for vacation and will be hanging out together. Now I'm thinking about the beach, sunny sky, and how great I'll look in a swimsuit. But then he ask me out of nowhere a Q's that made my vacation seem so far away now. He says " do you think your ready to have a baby?" He says he's been thinking about having kids lately. He says that he doesn't know how he feel yet about having kids (he's single by the way). I never mentioned babies to him because we're friends. I'm not even thinking about babies because I'm not in a relationship right now. So gentleman, why is he asking me this question and then suddenly withdraw from me? I'm giving him space right now for him to figure out what he needs too on his own. But I'm confused about him, can you guys explain?

i think that he likes you more than you are letting on and is testing the waters. to keep a present for 12 years thats some holding on there.

the reason he has gone quiet in my mind is that he has probably been thinking about the two of you together and been playing out different scenarios and maybe that was one of them, dose he want kids? if he know that you want them then maybe he is trying to get around that and wondering if he wants kids?

i would go on holiday and not mention it at all and see what happens, if it all gose well i think that it will naturally work itself out if not you will know either way.

I think there is kinda a communication gap, he might be under the impression that you like him more than a friend but need the little nudge. on the side note it's not easy to forget first love

Thank you for your advice. We could compromise but the thing is were in a friendship not relationship. So it's confusing me of what he wants or trying to say or trying to figure out.

Dam he really likes you. The only thing I can think of is that having a baby maybe with him is the thing that will keep you in LA or with him. But I could be completely wrong

He knows about my Faith and that I believe that children should only be conceive in a martial relationship. He say he respect values.
