Why do guys downplay stuff to their friends? ?

Why do guys act like they don't care as much about a girl or downplay their feelings to their friends?

I guess its an ego thing. If you downplay feelings and everything goes tits up then you don't feel quite as embarrassed or ashamed. I guess it also has to do with being raised by men who idolize people like John Wayne and so being emotionless is a misguided way for us to feel more masculine while being emotional would be seen as more feminine. This is of course ridiculous but its just the way things are. Im sure the next generation of men will be crying at everything and screaming poetry off the rooftops as an expression of the simplest feeling they have
