Does it mean anything when a guy uses 'x' at the end of a message?

I'm probably reading too much into this but there's this guy I really like and we have a date at the end of this month. He sent an 'x' at the end of a text for the first time. Normally when we talk on whatsapp we never use x's...
The only time I used one was with New Year and he didn't send one back. Felt bad hahah.

So now I don't know if I should send one back or not... Because I know people who only send x's on texts but not in a normal conversation...

I personally don't like it when a guy I barely know does this. I feel like that is showing affection too soon and that's something that should be earned over time. I only send with an X back if I feel the same way.
