Is it common for a straight male to take pictures of himself (a selfie) just because he wants to?

I know the question seems ridiculous, but the reason I ask is because every guy I've dated has always only taken photos with friends, with his car or motorcycle, doing an activity with friends or something like fishing, but never really a "selfie". The only time I have really noticed that guys take selfies is for a dating app or sometimes another social media profile. The guy I'm seeing has never taken photos of himself but started doing it the last few weeks and it's just been weird to me.

This question made me reflect on my life for a short while and realize I have never take a selfie without purpose. I have taken a total of about thirty selfies, which would average to about one selfie per year, and all of them were used for a purpose. Two were for my Tinder profile, one for Facebook, another five or so, for different other dating apps or websites. Another two were taken to show the process of various medical magnets. The rest were taken to entertain various people over the contrast of myself with a beard and long-ish hair, looking like a LOTR character, to myself without said beard and hair. To quote a friend: "From The Hobbit to American History X"
The only reason I've taken this many is that digging through the garbage in my phone is quite time-consuming and taking a selfie is often quicker than spend the time to dig through all the WhatsApp garbage.

The muscular gym obsessed men definitely take pictures of themselves a lot. They're similar to the yoga pant wearing gym chicks that have all the latest sports wear brands. These types of people are full of themselves and are addicted to taking selfies in the mirror to show off.

But, normal, average, every day guys usually aren't into selfie-taking to the same extent.

People who don't take a selfie at all in their life probably have insecurities that stop them. It's normal to take selfies, whether than be gym, sport, education, hobby or whatever related.

Not sure why or where the idea of it being a "gay" or "straight" thing comes from. I personally see less gay guys taking selfies.

I am going to kindly disagree with you. You are 20, you basically grew up in a world where selfies were already a part of social life. I am 29, when I was a teen/young adult selfies weren't a norm (they in fact didn't exist!!!), so I've never learned to live with them as a part of my life. I don't feel the need to take one, not because of insecurity reasons, but because I've never jumped on that bandwagon. Many people around my age or older see selfies that way.
