I don't see anything wrong with it. I mean he was still acknowledging your presence. Maybe he had somewhere to be since he didn't say anything that one time...

So you waved and smiled? Jeezz.. That's so rude.. It's like YOU can't be bothered to talk to us..
It's the same as if he said "hey".
He was possibly busy with something and in a hurry.

Funny enough, that's probably the biggest fear of anyone who casually up-nods lmao.
Some guys might be too shy to start a conversation out of nowhere, especially if they like you. It's likely meant to be a friendly acknowledgement of your presence, but it could also be a sign he wants to talk to you. Personally, I only up-nod friends and people I like but don't know very well. It's meant as a sign of openness to become better acquainted.
So, if you like the guy, I would say keep yourself open to conversations and give/take every opportunity to talk. It won't take very long for him to realize that you WANT to talk him. And I'm sure that realization has had some profound implications in the past.
It is a sign off friendship, and that he considers you close to him, if he didn't he would have done a downward nod, and it isn't that he didn't want to talk he likely was busy
Seems dumb. I would have done the same thing you did or said hi and made some small talk.
you didn't talk to him either
