Why did my boyfriend cancel our plans on my birthday?

Me and my boyfriend were going to just eat some easy food since he has work later today but he cancelled it. It's my birthday and I got really sad that he just cancelled out of nowhere. Why would he do this? Should I take it personal? We have a good relationship and always have fun together so I don't know why he suddenly cancelled.. :(
