+1 yI've had friends who are women my entire life. It's just something that happens when you hang around people with the same interests as you. We had plenty of women playing video games and traditional 'nerdy' stuff like DnD for decades. Heck, I'm still tight with some people I met in middle school and one from late elementary school.
And it isn't like this is a rare situation, it may seem like it because more attention is paid to the going-ons of groups that are having disagreements and what not.
I feel it's just easiest to make friends with whomever you're most compatible with, man or woman. People thought I was 'being sweet' on a woman who just got a job where I was working and she was a huge DnD fan. She was also absolutely broke. Found out her favorite color, went and bought an inexpensive dice set so she could join our bi-weekly DnD sessions she had seemed real keen on joining. Which she did. Done the same for guys before too. We had similar interests and the whole dice thing cost like $7 and now I've had a friend for 15 years.
Just do what you do with friends who are the same gender as you with the people who are the opposite. Works pretty much the same and if you're straight forward, there's a lot less guessing or speculation. When being straight forward, I've been asked what my intentions were and my answer was always in the orbit of "We like similar stuff, I'd like to be friends. If we feel something more, we can talk about it when it happens.". Something along those lines.
It's weird seeing people seek out opposite gender people to be friends and then pretty much put them on a pedestal. I'm sure it's different for everyone but it gives me vibes of trying to alter their perception, or the perception of their group, like having someone of a different gender is some sort of badge of honor.
In hobbies and things, gender rarely comes up. But when we're just hanging out and chatting, I'm 100% sure in the what-if scenarios or politics or views on a subject are influenced by gender, pretty hard not too I guess.
Direct questions about gender is usually when someone is shopping for or trying to surprise someone and you're asked "as a guy, would you maybe consider this a fun gift", stuff along that lines. And sometimes if certain ones are feeling cheeky or are really relaxed with some good drinks, they looooooooove to ask me about situations where I thought a woman was being nice to me but apparently was missing signals like a fucking champ. There have been times where it's actually made them angry that I managed to miss a signal. Just a little bit. I mean, they're super obvious NOW but at the time the thought is "she's just being nice, don't be a creeper" lol.
Basically, people may seek out opposite gendered people for friends for a lot of reasons. But unless they have similar interests, it might be pretty hard to keep a friendship going that doesn't revolve around them being a different gender. And that seems like it'd be pretty weird or uncomfortable.
From my POV, experiences, and seeing how other people and friends behave, most of the time, the person's gender isn't the main aspect. But people may be different today, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Good luck!00 Reply

Nothing. I had a realisation (after my breakup) that there is no inherent benefit in having a female friend: they often require more "attention" than guy friends and can take "fun insults" literally... Thus, i look for friends based on their qualities rather than gender

+1 yMost guys who do this just want sex but some really care about their female friends

Asker+1 yI have a couple guy friends, they do care about me.. especially one I don’t doubt it, and I wouldn’t wanna lose my friendship with them but at the same time I feel like it’s pointless
Asker+1 yAnd we haven’t said anything about sex
- +1 y
It’s not pointless. Some guys are really cool. Give them a chance, see if they wanna be friends for real.
- +1 y
Update: I don't know. Different perspectives? I mean I have friends of both genders (well, technically all genders) and I hang out with all of them.
- +1 y
It’s the same but different. I don't know how to describe it. But don’t dump a guy who wants to be friends with you just cause he’s a guy unless he really starts hitting on you or makes it obvious that he likes you likes you and you don’t feel the same.
Asker+1 yOk thank you
- +1 y
You’re welcome
Asker+1 yWhat if my best guy friend tries to make me jealous? It seems like it in some ways I realized, and the few times I brought up someone else he says “oh..”
- +1 y
Probably means he likes you
Asker+1 yWhy won’t he be more clear?
- +1 y
No clue. Guys get that way sometimes. Do you like him?
Asker+1 yYeah, I just haven’t said anything to him about it
- +1 y
Tell him how you feel. There’s a good chance he likes you back. And even if he doesn’t tell him won’t ruin your friendship. You guys will still be friends.
- +1 y
* telling him
Asker+1 yIt won’t change anything with our friendship? What’s a good way to say it? It makes me nervous and I never tell someone I like them first, so I don’t know how to go about it
- +1 y
It won’t change anything. Just sit him down in person and tell him the truth straight up. There’s a very good chance he likes you too.
Asker+1 yThat’s hard too because he doesn’t have time to hangout with anyone. He was just telling me he can’t hangout with his family or friends and his everyday schedule is pretty much just work and sleep and he hardly has time for himself. And when he’s not at work or sleeping he usually has other things to take care of
Asker+1 yHe knows I really miss him though
- +1 y
Then tell him by text. Tell him you like him—you know, like him like him—and you really miss him. Although tbh having a boyfriend who never has time to hang out isn’t gonna be much fun. Are you guys long distance?
Asker+1 yAnd I don’t know if this is a coincidence or what, but a couple or few weeks ago somehow we were both drunk texting each other and that definitely made it different for a few days
- +1 y
You guys got sexual? Or confessed your feelings for each other?
Asker+1 yThat’s true. Is there a good way to say it? No, we’re in the same county
- +1 y
Just tell him straight up “Hey. I just wanted to say in case you didn’t know already that I like you—like you like you—and I really miss you.”
Asker+1 yIt seemed like possible flirting, even though I’m not 100% sure what it was. Definitely different than usual for us. Lots of playing around and compliments
Asker+1 yThank you

That’s awesome! Flirting is a really good sign 😊. I gtg. Later girl.
Asker+1 yOk, thank you

3.1K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. I had many female friends. One was sort of my best friend for a while. I don't know why, it just ended up that way. I had a girlfriend so I really was not looking for a relationship. These friends were really nice to me and it was really comfortable being around them. One of them I could trust with my deepest feelings.
00 Reply1K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. For me it's about understanding women better. Where shall I get to know women better or learn how to date them right?
My parents were colleagues before they got married they never dated in modern terms.
So family isn't much of an option.01 Reply

Asker+1 yI find it weird because my guy friends don’t ask me questions like that and I don’t either
Asker+1 yThey just ask me for advice as far as the problems they go through and I do that. Just advice back and forth but not about other guys or girls
Asker+1 yYeah. Just not on relationships in their lives
Asker+1 yYeah, I just don’t get it. I’m not trying to make bad assumptions about anyone or anything like that, but how is it good as opposed to having female friends as a female?
Asker+1 yI guess I’m not used to having guy friends cuz I’ve always had female friends, or I just don’t comprehend it much? Like I don’t know the differences
Asker+1 yThat’s true. That’s probably why it confuses me
1.6K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. I have them mostly just to help translate my girlfriends period texts XD. It's a little hard to figure out when they end up all really passive aggressive.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yThe ONLY thing we want from females is pussy.
No guy goes out of his way to be “friends” with a girl.
Girls are drama, childishness, cattiness, whining, jealousy, etc. It isn’t worth it.02 Reply
Asker+1 ySo my guy friends want sex even though they don’t say anything sexual?
Opinion Owner+1 y80% of men will NEVER approach a female
10% will only approach when the timing is absolutely perfect.
and then 10% will approach any thing with legs because they do not care what you say and will bounce to the next target without hesitation.
The guy “friends” want you, but they will not risk pissing you off or losing you by taking a chance. If an honest opportunity presented itself... some would take that chance.
But most females aim for the douchebags who approach everything and have zero intent ever making a move on a guy first.
