What does it mean when your boyfriend says he doesn't feel needed?

I remember we argued once because something happened between my parents and I but I didn't want to discuss it.
I completely shut down.
As a consequence he kept digging and trying to know what had gone on. Anyways I later started to tell him things and reveal my difficulty.
Suddenly when I'd call on him to pick me up or just try to include him more in my life suddenly he was unavailable or just not good at dealing with these types of things.
I started to shut down again.
Then he needed me to help him financially, pick him up from the station when he was stranded and all different situations.
In all the time we were together he abandoned me when I needed him, and he dismissed my requests even when I just wanted him around...
So what exactly is meant by this term, "you act like you don't need me?"

It means that he doesn't feel appreciated. For him it may feel like it doesn't matter to you if he's around or not.
