Why did my friend's boyfriend touch my knees?

I was sitting on a high chair (his girlfriend wasn't with us) and I was talking and laughing with him then he came close to me and put both of his hands of my knees while talking. I don't know I just found it weird or am I overthing it?

It's definitely weird, but as a guy he was probably waiting for you to give him a sign to go further, so as long you show you're not interested he will eventually stop.
