Guys, Is he playing me?

I and my guy friend have both recently broke up from our relationships. Mine of 10 yes his of only 5 months. He has always been someone look to and vice versa for advice and strength. We’ve become very close where we share our childhood , future goals and secrets. We become very close where I am developing feelings and I feel he has also. He looks at me differently and pays me way more compliments now that I’m single. We have weekly lunches and text / call often. He has made comments like we should take a trip that I need to be patient , that I’m stuck with him. But suddenly he tells me he’s not looking for something serious, and he’s gone on a date. Truthfully I’m looking for a relationship with him either it’s too soon. But I’m confused from what he said to now. It’s not fair for him to wait til I’m ready but why say those things then change? Is he playing me? Just need clarification if there is 1

I certainly hope he isn't.. but IF he was, he would know every one of your weaknesses because you've entrusted your deepest feelings to him.
I would advise you to think with your head here, not your heart.. He is far more valuable to you as a friend and nothing more. That way he will always be on your side,, no matter what he gets up to with other women. However, once the line is severed and you become more, you will lose that... and from what you've described in your question you are still extremely raw from your breakup and can ill afford to lose him.
