A guy confuses me a lot. Does he like me?

There is a guy from my class who is outgoing and really popular. He is always surrounded by girls. We used to be seat partner and we were really close that he shares everything with me. He would always say I am the only one who knows this and that. Everyone in my class felt that there was something between us. But now he would talk with my friends and other girls but he would become silent around me. He seems hesitant to talk with me. He would always stare at me and we makes lot of eye contact and he never breaks the eye contact. He would always sit face to face with me or he would try to always be near me but does not talk with me. One time, there was a talk about crushes and I caught him staring at me and smiling. He would stare at me while laughing to some joke. Sometimes, he would act like he likes me and sometime, he would ignore me. And when a boy confessed to me, he was staring at me. He really confuses me, Does he like me or is it just my mind playing games with me?
