Boyfriend lying about why he's not available?

He's been doing it for some time now.
We have each other on Steam, so I can see his gaming activity. He will take hours to reply to my messages, and say something like "sorry, I was sleeping" when I can see that he's been playing for the last few hours.
The thing is, I don't mind him playing video games, because I do that myself. Why can't he just say that he's been distracted by his game, when he knows that I do the same? Why is he lying about it for seemingly no reason?
I haven't confronted him about it, I realize that it's a very small thing, but the more it happens, the more it bothers me.

Some people lie about everything. Beware. That said, maybe he's just got no balls and he's afraid you would be upset if he said he wanted to spend time without you.

You gain nothing by not bringing this up, except you're avoiding confrontation. Or to put it another way, you're delaying how long it will take for this relationship to hit a breaking point where either you break up OR you both decide to be more serious/honest with each other. It's in your interest to speed things up.

You're right that I'm avoiding confrontation, I'm scared that it'll cause a fight, even though I have no reason to believe that. We've been together for 2 years, and we've (or at least I have) been open about everything, which is why this situation is so confusing to me. I don't understand what I might've done or said to make him think it's better to lie about this.

Look back on the times in my life where I had zero fights/disagreements: at the time I thought that meant everything was perfect. Actually it just meant that she avoided confrontation. She respected me WAY less than when I was in relationships later on where there were arguments. Arguing in a respectful way or disagreeing is fine. So is moving on when you're not married and the other person hasn't earned your trust & doesn't think that's too important.
