Why do guys try and secretly compete?

I was at the gym and it was this guy I went to high school with we talked for a little while and he ask me what kinda car I drive and where I work mind you i haven’t talked to this guy in years ( I could tell he was insecure just by those questions) and I answered but it felt really weird after I thought about it. I’m a handsome guy , lean kinda ripped about 6’4 pretty tatted so I’ve come accustomed to guys either feeling insecure around me or trying to compete by having weird stare offs or just trying to outright start confrontation like wtf my own cousin won’t even sell me weed anymore because he thinks I’m sleeping with his wife ( we live in the same apartment complex he’s a lot older than me ) why are some men so insecure like this?
