Why won’t he just let me drive?

My husband and I take turns driving. I am not always the best with directions so sometimes I ask my partner where to go. If I miss a turn or choose to make what I feel is a safe decision, he gets upset. And by upset he gets aggravated and insulting.

I am a cautious driver and will always put our safety first. But I do not need to be berated when trying to focus on the road.

He keeps insisting that I drive when he is tired, but I can’t take the backlash of having him as a passenger.

My friend made over 3 times more money than her husband and he would never let her drive the car when the two of them were seated together because he wanted to feel like he was the dominant one in the relationship, a lot of men base their self worth in their car, the driving skills and their ability to navigate the roads. I think it’s a psychological status thing for guys.

You answered your own question. He won't let you drive cause you just Saif you're not the best with directions, I'm not good at directions either and not comfortable driving on unfamiliar roads so I let my husband do most of the driving.

Some people are just terrible backseat drivers and not much you can do about it except tell them to stop telling you how to drive

Thanks for the advice. I have tried that before and nothing seems to stick. I just can’t handle his reaction. It makes me feel so stupid and incapable

I would just tell him to drive every time even if he says he’s too tired you just tell him that oh well you’re too busy complaining about my driving

What I mean is I will let another car go at a stop sign. Or even wait for more than one break in traffic before I force my way in. Or choose to turn around in a place that I’m more comfortable with if I miss a turn.

It may not be what he would like me to do but I drive more on the side of caution

I’m not quite sure. But he is normally very supportive. Just have never had him be so degrading until today.

My wife and I have been married 50 years. For the last 10 years she has opted to let me do all the driving. During that time she has become very critical of the way I drive. My Driving record 3 accidents in 60 years of driving. One one in the southern states. I drive by slowing down an making alteration to my direction as the traffic develops situations. She on the other hand thinks far ahead and changes lanes when the turn is a mile ahead. So the issue becomes very controlling on her part. So much so that my blood pressure is much lower when I am by myself. I know it is not meant to be chastising but it is very easy to react to. Keeping my cool is at best difficult. The solve was to get her on Prozac.

Possibly, but in the 10+ years I’ve driven I’ve never been in an accident and I have even drove through ice storms. I’d like to think that means something.
