Pretty much every working man where I live carries a pocket knife as a tool, not a weapon. I end up using my knife almost every day.
I've carried a knife with me every day since second or third grade, and in fact, I just got a brand new one today - a quality "cheapie" that I don't mind tearing up or losing at work. I specifically wanted one that was only medium-sized (most of my collection is larger), and very thin and lightweight. The ones in my rotation are really all too big, too heavy, and too thick for all day work carry, and they're too expensive to be lost (I recently lost one, which is why I made this change finally).

This is a KA-BAR Dozier Folding Hunter. The AUS 8A stainless blade is a hair under 3", while the FRN handle is about 4", which is big enough for my XL hands. The best part? Under $30!
Considering most of my knives are Benchmade or Spyderco and even a couple of customs, this is comically cheap, but still a quality knife. I just took it out of the box today, and I will say that the blade doesn't deploy as easily as I'd like, and there's some grittiness right before it locks, but I'm going to take it apart and polish it up with the Dremel this weekend and it should be nice and slick when I'm done.
I got it in blue, both because blue is my main company color, and because I'm hoping that the blue handle will stand out easily, so if I set it down on a job, or if falls out of my pocket or something, I'll be more likely to see it than if it was black or tan.
If I end up liking it, which seems likely, I'm going to get another one with D2 steel. D2 tool steel is what drill bits are made out of, and it's excellent for knife blades EXCEPT that it isn't stainless, so it can rust. Most D2 knife blades come with a protective coating, as is the case with the KA-BAR Doziers, but you can also just oil them once a month and don't leave it out in the rain, and you'll be fine. D2 is easier to sharpen and stays sharp longer than any stainless steel. D2 versions are also more expensive at around $45.

If this (Dozier) knife was a Spyderco, and was otherwise identical, it would be 3 times the price. I have an old Moki (made in the same factory as Spydercos at the time, and sold by Spyderco for a bit in the 90s) that's fairly similar, and I paid $60 for it in 1995 or so, which means it would cost $80-90 today at least.
Almost every single time I leave my house, I am carrying my favorite pocket knife:

It has a perfect weight and balance, is stainless steel, and it is extremly durable.
@OlderAndWiser. Very nice. As you know when you always carry it you find uses for it.
Because I wear a business suit with a white shirt and tie every day, it surprises some people, and I've even had a few jokes made about my knife. . . until it became handy and others were glad I was carrying it. At my age, IDGAF what anybody else thinks!
Absolutely I do! Thankfully I have only used it as a very handy tool. My father gifted me one 14 years ago after some fool threaten my life. I keep it hidden in my car. I also keep mace and multiple Hidden GPS trackers. Their linked to my father. He has known my where abouts everyday for 14 years and Im perfectly fine with that!. After a recent occurrence where a family member of this individual attempted to hack me I have serious considered a carrying license but I detest guns because what that fool put me through... But I wouldn't be foolish with one like he was if I choose to own one.
Anyhow back to the subject at hand my knife certainly has come in handy... Example Once I found 2 chicks tangled in fishing junk on the beach. Cut them free and took them to the nearest emergency vet.
@meetkitty123. Good for you meetkitty! You might seriously consider a carry permit which would at least give you the option.
Yes I suppose you're right
On me, regularly? No, because I can’t have it at work. It’s in my car, usually. If I’m somewhere that’s not work, then it’s in my purse. I got into the habit when I started taking public transit alone when I was about 10 or so. I used to have cheap multi tools that would do the trick to scare someone off if needed.
The one that goes in my car or my purse is this one. It was gifted to me a while ago by one of my brothers. I mostly use it now to whittle stuff from soft wood, like little whistles and such, and then I give them to my students. But it’s there if I need to ward someone off. I also have a classic Victorinox Swiss Army multi tool, but that typically stays at home.

I used to carry a pocket knife or I guess it could be described as a swiss army knife, and also pepper spray (I still carry the pepper spray but I quit carrying the knife once I got a car). Back in the day I used to work a night shift job, 10PM to 6AM and the closest bus stop was over a half a mile away. The neighborhood I had to walk past to get to work wasn't the best though it was the worst either. I basically had the pocket knife in case the pepper spray failed but something about knowing I had it on me made me feel safe.
When I go out on our land I always carry my pocket knife and my Glock 9mm. I also use the pocket knife for something or the other every day. It's just a handy tool for lots of things.
@Bratsondanielle. You can't go wrong with a Glock.
It's an easy handgun, it can be holstered chambered, and Xtra clip is small and handy... it's a nice "everyday gun" when I'm just on my own property
@Bratsondanielle. Yes ma'am, I completely agree.
😘😘
I carry a small handgun and knife to pick my kid up from the bus... the world might be going crazy, but I'm not going to be crazy enough to trust a crazy world. I'm going to shoot crazy in the face and stab that mother fucker in the eye. Fuck woke people... and they made this world like this.
@Pete671 Same I can't speak for the UK, but from what I've seen here in the states... it started with cutting help off for people with mental health issues. They filled the streets with a new level of crazy. Recently it just got worse because another group of people that should be taken off the streets get shuffled right back onto the streets... violent criminals. It's bad. So bad that I think the cheap fentanyl is keeping their tits calm. I in no way think that drug is good for anybody, but they don't do as much damage while they're all half asleep on the sidewalk. Anyways, to summarize my thoughts... we need the jail/prison system back for violent/sexual predators and we need asylums back for the crazies. I'd much rather have my tax dollars going to that, than where it currently goes... funding wars and bullshit.
NO.
The current scenario for the legality of knives in India is that:
· It is illegal to carry spring actuated knives
· It is illegal to carry Button actuated knives
· It is illegal to carry knives of more than the specified length (perhaps 9 inches) or breadth (2 inches).
@Being_a_good_Indian. The knife in the picture is my daily carry knife, the blade is only 3.5 inches and it is just a folding knife with the little knob to assist one-handed opening.
Absolutely. I use about a half dozen different ones varying in size, blade type, quality depending on what/where my day involves.
I also carry an EDC (everyday carry) flashlight, OC spray, and a couple of keychain sized multi-tools. I can carry all of this gear in any shorts or pants I own.
Many years ago, I used to carry a pocket knife that my father gave me all the time. It sometimes came in handy. Then, TSA started confiscating them, and I was doing a lot of traveling by plane, so I stopped. I'm no longer traveling much, but I just haven't resumed the pocket knife in the pocket. In fact, I don't even know where that pocket knife went to... it's probably somewhere in the house.
When I worked on a farm I had a knife clipped on my boot. A tool for work, but I felt better knowing I had it in general. Versatile.
Alright! Girl power!
Good for you. I have also given the important women in my life a nice "Leatherman", which has a knife and a variety of small tools. These Leatherman are easily fit into a small purse, and once you remember to carry it and that you have it, it's amazing how often you use it.
I find these things too flimsy. So I got me a solid fixed blade one.
When it's foreseeable that I may need it, I'll have it with me. I use it frequently.
@andreasderjuengere. For excellent lock blades have a look at Benchmade.
I used to carry a small lock blade Ka-Bar. I lost it somewhere along the way. I've never replaced it. I have several pocket knives but most are garbage and I don't carry them.
I look at new blades every now and then but haven't bought one. I look at modern Ka-Bars, but judging by the look and price they aren't as good as they used to be.
Whoo does that? Where do you live? If I may ask!
I never heard of this thing!
I live in the U. S.
I can vouch for this guy. I'm from the North American prairies and grew up in a farming community, and it's often seen as weird if a guy isn't carrying a pocket knife. Personally I have been carrying a knife pretty much everyday since I was 16. I carry it in schools, concerts, bars, hospitals, etc. Basically if I'm not going to get strip searched for carrying one I'm carrying one.
@CindersFire Interesting. :D
Can vouch as well. We Americans love our weapons. And its actually perfectly legal in most places to carry a weapon. Although no one really considers a pocket knife to be a weapon, its just a tool to have.
No, hunting knives are usually (but not always) a fixed blade like a kitchen knife as well as quite a bit larger. Most people who carry pocket knives carry a folding one that they can stick in their pocket without worrying about stabbing themselves. Additionally most people I know dont carry a knife with a blade more than a couple inches (less than 10 cm). Personally I mostly use mine for cleaning my nails, cutting lose threads, and opening mail/ packages.
Yes, i have a swiss army knife just like this.

For me, the only thing the corkscrew does is hold the little mini screwdriver inside of it, and that's not enough of an advantage to give up the Philips for it. And, yeah, people love the scissors, but the once or twice a year I'd use them isn't nearly often enough to carry them around. I'd rather have the thinner, lighter knife.
Yes, but it is reserved as a weapon, not a tool. It is a good quality Buck knife that is very sharp. I use another knife as a tool for opening packages, etc.
I do, and I regularly carry a gun (2 actually) and I have a concealed carry permit.
I have a carry permit as well, but I don't see my knife as a weapon. I see my knife as a tool.
I don't ever want to bring a knife to a gun fight 😉
@worldscolide. What do you carry? I usually carry either my S&W.357 magnum or my H&K P30SK 9mm.
Oh definitely my knife is a tool. I have one ona key chain that looks like a freaking key. It's cool. I carry two Springfield xd's
@worldscolide. Nice pistols.
Thanks. I also have a pair of desert eagles which are too big to carry lol
@worldscolide. Holy fuck!
They actually hurt to fire.
A mini Swiss army knife 3 cm long on my keychain. I have to open delivery packages sometimes and I hate doing it with a pen or fingernail.
Yeah... althogh it's a butterfly knife. Balisong as they call it. Everywhere I got (except court)
Yes a knife is my weapon of choice
easy to hide
never needs to reload
no collateral damage
silent
can be tipped with medicine, chemicals, drugs
can be thrown and sharpened
Plus knife tricks look super cool
No, If I did and the cops here stopped me, I might get shot.
@msc545. Cops are right not to like knives. If you want to see a terrifying video watch "Surviving Edged Weapons" (I think on YouTube). If you do get stopped you just politely tell the officer "Hey, Sir, I do have a pocket knife on me". Most likely he would just say , ok just do me a favor and let me hold onto it while we are talking".
Just don't pull the fucker out.
Where do you live? Seattle?
I've a couple of work knives, a mushroom picking knife and I recently lost a leatherman somewhere. I'll take one out if I need one but it's not something I always have.
No I don’t wake up in the morning and ever think about how I should ever carry a pocket knife. If I had a job that required me to use one then I could just leave it at work
@trillxhippy. It's not about "waking up and thinking about carrying a pocket knife", it's just part of a normal routine and a handy tool.
You’re right
Yess I carry one in my purse, car and have a bunch around the house.
Depending on where you live then it would be useful. In my city? Pocket knife is useless.
They say its illegal to carry a knife like that in Miami Florida it’s a little bit over the length limit
I always do cause sometimes I gotta open shit or undo shit
A Pocket Knife is a valuable tool & you never know: If you don't have it, you may wish you did.
Keys, phone, wallet, knife. Never leave home without it.
No. I wish, though, but having one might get me in more trouble than without.
No, basically illegal in the UK, my dad does but he has for 50 years
Illegal in the UK? Seriously?
Pretty much, certainly can't carry one everyday, maybe for fishing or something like that
Yes. I always carry a pocket knife plus a few other weapons depending on the situation.
No in UK, not allowed any bladed article in public unless it's for a specific and reasonable purpose,,,
Even then it needs to be wrapped up in a towel or similar, put in a sealed box and hidden from view until needed,,,
@pete671. Good grief! No thanks.
No, I have one but I forget to take it with me lol
multitool... leatherman
Yes I do. Mines a clip on type, they come in handy when you live in the country.
Yeah a knife brass knuckles sometimes taser and mace pepper spray
Yeah always especially for my job
Not in my pocket, but I have one in my car.
Nah I'm going with a Leatherman Surge.
No, but maybe I should
At least three.
Thats illegal here
No, I have no need for one.
As a biology student I carry a scalpel around lol
Nope.
Nah. Battle axe.
Nope
