When I first meet a guy, they often try to lift me up, which makes me feel insecure. I'm not a small girl, but I'm not huge either, and they've always been successful in doing so. However, I always feel embarrassed and ask them to put me down.
Why is this such a common occurrence? Is there some sort of 'guy code' related to lifting a girl, or is it more common for us bigger girls as a sort of challenge?

Personally when I do it this is what I am thinking: She is so tiny I bet she is so light let me test it. I do this often with women that I find attractive, I am sure most guys won't want to touch a woman they don't find attractive. So you could see it as a compliment.
As far as I am aware there is no guy code involved. There could be personal reasons like testing their strength or wanting to feel you closer. It isn't negative perse unless you think the guy is not attractive which would be a breach of personal space indeed in that case you could let them know after the fact or let people you are with know so they can politely explain to the guy to not do it anymore, put a bit of social pressure behind it.
It is usually a sweet thing to do that most girls would love, but your feeling is totally understandable and you can tell them that respectfully and they would stop
