Guys, How do I know if the quiet guy in class likes me?

We both have been in the same class for about 1 1/2 years, and we have never spoken but I catch him staring at me sometimes and I'm not sure if this is a sign or something? For context he is very quiet, but he's confident and very smart (smartest guy in the class), he plays football, and I honestly don't think he has a lot of friends. He is kind of a loner, but you wouldn't think that by looking at him because he's attractive and looks like he would talk to lots of people, but he doesn't. Long story short, I have had this sort of "liking from a distance" type of thing going on for him and I just wanted some help in figuring out if he might like me as he is hard to read and based on other answers I've seen on here, the eye contact might be a tell or it might not, plus when I do catch him staring he does completely face me in a way if that is any help. Also, I would like to add that I did dm him on Instagram last week and he never "looked" at it as its still says "sent" but he may have seen it and not replied so this has me questioning if he is interested at all. If anyone could give any advice it would be a great help, and it will help me decide if I should go up to him in person and just be upfront with him but I'm nervous about that because if he's not interested then he may think it's annoying or weird to ask something twice.
