LOL... I love this question.
In short, the answer is yes.
Guys DO make sense, but I realize that to most females - especially as young as you - they don't.
I will try and explain this by first quoting you:
"I know that guys are scared of rejection and getting rejected."
Yes, but let me try to put this in more general terms.
Guys are afraid of losing or being defeated and we view almost everything in life as something like a competition or struggle.
Not only are we afraid of losing/being defeated, but we also, INSTINCTIVELY, do not reveal information because a guy unconsciously but instinctively thinks:
"When someone knows information about me, then they know information that can be used to defeat me or thwart my plans or goals."
So, a guy is very reticent to reveal what he knows or feels and only to someone he trusts.
This is why, as you will learn from dating and relationships as you get older, women complain that men don't share much.
Women share because they are evolved to be more communal.
We are not evolved that way for survival and protection reasons. That would take a bit to explain.

Could actually be he doesn’t like anyone at the moment. Or he does like someone, he just doesn’t want word getting out and being rejected or ridiculed by who ever he might be crushing on.
