Do guys feel a hit to their ego when they leave someone for someone less attractive?

I looked at the Instagram profile of a guy I used to date and saw that he has a girlfriend who I find less attractive than myself. Surprisingly, this discovery made me feel worse instead of better. I realize now that our breakup wasn't about my looks, but more about our lack of compatibility.

It’s a serious hit to my ego. Do guys realize they downgraded in looks or do they even care?

If you’re still checking in on him then you’re probably still available, meaning you aren’t the one that got away since he didn’t come back, he found someone else. So I doubt it is a hit to his ego. Also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so just because you believe she’s less attractive does not mean he thinks the same, in fact he can find her more beautiful than you inside and out, since you seem so shallow. Just look at Aaron Taylor Johnson and his wife, I’d say she isn’t hot enough for him, others would beg to differ and call him ugly.

Often people move on because they find someone less toxic or just more appealing than simply looks. It can take a few rounds of dating before you realise looks are not hugely important, it’s how people are with each other.
