I recently started my job and was placed through campus, the same where me and my boyfriend met. He still hasn't been placed so he goes to college or is at home. Even if he calls me between my work I am there to help him out or even talk to him just like that. But he takes no initiative on the small things i ask help for and sometimes get irritated when I tell him something. I don't know if its the mental state due to placements or am i being too available for him?

I'd say that it could be because of both the reasons.
It's a human tendency to take things for granted. Each one of us takes one or the other thing for granted if not more. So, you being too much available for him didn't go as planned. Yes, if the person is in some sorta problem then you should be available but not otherwise all the time unless the person is thoughtful and values your care.
Now, it can also be the anxiety and frustration of him not being placed yet. Ofcourse, career is as important as a relationship if not more. So, it's natural to get irritated by smallest of things when the mind is occupied somewhere else.
Give it a little time. Understand and act accordingly. Don't be available 24*7 but also don't avoid him when he's in need.
You have to be on the same page, or it will never work.
