Am I really going to have more success getting asked out at different types of social events than the ones I currently go to?

I go to groups that are just for getting to know people in the area. So it's basically just conversation groups over coffee. For some reason it's mainly guys that go to these. Someone thinks I'd have better luck joining a male dominated association, like computer science or engineering society, as the guys there would be desperate to meet women. That person was forgetting the fact that at the groups I already go to, most of the guys' professions happen to be in those fields. So how would going to an actual association make men like me more?
