I recently reached out to a quiet guy that I liked. We've only talked a few times in real life but there's been some subtle signs that he's interested like being engaged in our conversations, making eye contact, smiling to himself when he walks past me. So, I reached out! His replies are really reciprocating. He sends me more messages than what I send and he voluntarily sent a picture of some of his work to me when I mentioned it. He's matching my energy too and sending me emojis and stuff even though he's super quiet, reserved irl. The only thing is - his reply times are always 2-3 hours. It's hard to hold a proper conversation over text and in real life. So... is he interested?

The man is busy with his work. Deadlines. I am not joshing here. Invite him out for coffee in the daytime. to a place where you sit down. Have a real, coherent conversation. Get things said. No more cat and mouse. When I was in the academy, I invited a girl out to coffee. We negotiated a friends with benefits relationship that lasted a wonderful year of school. It was a refuge for both of us, with no dating protocols.

Many guys are reluctant to ask now because of the modern temperament of society; wokism and feminism. I'm probably the same age as your grandfather. And I have been at it a long time. Take the initiative and get it done. Prove to him that you are safe and interested. That is where these times have gone.
