How to tell a guy is calling you out for lying?

I was talking to a guy that I have a crush on. He was talking about work. He works at a body shop. I know nothing about cars. At one point, I lied and said I was at a shopping center cart rolled out into the parking lot car hit it, then the car behind it the car in front of it. He half-smiled and said that was a funny story and then said back to the topic and continued to talk about work. I felt mortified. I felt as if he was INDIRECTLY calling me out. I feel so embarrassed I so obviously lied.

I am not sure if he was simply dismissing me or if he was subtly call me out for lying. At 51 I am embarrassed to admit. I do NOT know how to say I really enjoyed seeing you and want to engage in conversation and didn't know know enough about cars to do so. I am mortified and said something so stupid... without sounding like an immature 5 year old.
