There is a guy at school. (I am older and going back, but I’ve found lots of other older ones there too, interestingly.) Anyway, he walked up to me one day at the locker and said “hi, I’m in the locker next to you”. Later, we in a small group activity together. I performed my role in front of the class with a partner. He said that we did excellent. After that, he started using my name. He would say “hi, *my name*, and “bye, *my name*. We make small talk sometimes. Is it just friendly?

Based on the behaviors described, this goes slightly beyond simple politeness and moves into active interest, though it is too soon to tell if it is romantic or purely platonic interest.

This guy is actively trying to build rapport and likely sees you as a cool, interesting person he wants to get to know better. Whether that leads to a friendship or something more depends on whether he starts trying to spend time with you outside of that small group activity, such as asking you to study together or chatting about non-school topics.

It sounds like it could be a little more than friendly for him to go out of his way to be nice to you and to talk with you. If you like him, keep talking to him as much as you can and see what happens.
