So this is something that I plan on turning into a series. I know from my experience this year as a freshman in college that it's really easy to let everything get to you, stress you out, and ultimately kill every bit of positivity that was in your body. There has been a lot that's happened and I've had to learn to cope with that stress. I want to share my experiences and methods of relaxation with everyone who may be experiencing this now or who may be getting ready to experience this.

Remember, these are methods that work for me and those around me. If none of them work for you, then that's okay. Different things are relaxing for different people. You just have to keep trying things that interest you until you find something that works.
The first one I want to talk about that I personally use is writing. I'm a film student who wants to be a screenwriter someday, so I kind of have to enjoy writing. However, I've loved writing for much longer than I've wanted to do it for a living. It's something that I have found to be very therapeutic.

1. You basically get to let your brain throw up on the paper.
You don't have to be a very good writer to enjoy it or find it relaxing. All that matters is that you don't force yourself to do anything. For example, let's say you had a dream last night that you manage to remember. It was a really cool one too. Just open up a notebook or your computer and start writing it down.
You aren't forcing yourself to come up with anything. You're just writing down whatever comes to mind. That emptying of your brain can be very relaxing because you focus on what you're doing rather than everything else that may be going on.

2. It's a good way to release emotions.
Writing is something that you can funnel any kind of emotion into whether it's anger, sadness, or joy. When you have so much of one emotion, especially a negative one, you can push it into your writing and that helps you get it out of your system. Maybe you got into a fight with your significant other.
Even just writing down what the fight was about, what happened during the fight, and what your opinion on the entire matter is can be a way to calm yourself down. You give yourself a moment to focus on that one event and emotion, but once you're done with it you can take a step back and leave those emotions on the page.

3. It can just be lots of fun.
I love writing stories about worlds I wish I lived in or about experiences I wish I could have. It gives me the chance to imagine myself in that place which is a nice break from reality. I even enjoy getting to go back and read some of my older work and laugh at how bad or silly it was. There are huge communities that you can share your work with others and then read theirs as well. Just a couple that come to mind are Deviant Art and Wattpad.
Honestly, writing is just something I've always loved. I have used it as a stress reliever since middle school and I know plenty of others who use it as well. It's something I stongly suggest you give a shot.

This was interesting and I totally agree. I have never written outside of writing school assignments until I came on GAG. I enjoy writing about what I am passionate about, informing people, or helping people. A lot of people on here think I put a lot of emotion in my writing I didn't think I was that good but I will take it.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed writing my first myTake. I didn't think anyone would find it interesting or funny aside from me.
I felt the same way. I have a dry, sarcastic sense of humor.
I don't know if you noticed from the competition piece, but I have a rather dirty sense of humor.
This was a really interesting myTake. I honestly only thought of writing as something related to school or some sort of diary (I know I sound like I'm 4 versus 24). But I honestly have never thought about it like this. I suppose I love talking out my stress and writing is the same thing except it's on paper. Cooking does the three things for me you mention here except for the first one, I don't any form of throw up involved in my cooking, but I may try simply writing.
Haha! Definitely give writing a shot. I love cooking too. I'm going to write more myTakes like this on stress relief and I'll probably talk about cooking at some point.
Whoa? I'll be looking out for the cooking myTake! But, yeah this was great, especially the part you were talking about dreams. And considering how interesting my dreams can get it could be cool writing about them now and then re-reading what I wrote later in life.
Dude. I'm working on finishing a short story I started my freshman year in high school then put down and walked away from until now. At the time I was super interested in archery in pirates so it's about a band of mercenary archers out to bring back their leader's sister who ran away to be the worlds first archer pirate.
Damn!! That sounds a lot better than those Johnny Depp pirate movies they keep making. Your making writing sound way better than what I thought of it. I don't how but you gotta finish that and post it so I can read it!
I most certainly will. I'm not proud to admit it, but I have a Deviant Art account where it will probably go up. As of right now, the account is full of Attack on Titan fanfics I wrote during my senior year of high school. I'm so ashamed.
No worries. And besides, a cool person once told me that writing allows your brain to basically throw up on paper. So I'm pretty sure your excused from whatever it "throws up" on the paper.
Damn. That person sounds hella awesome.
