How long does it take you to run a mile?

whether you run track or not, im just curious how long it takes for you to run a mile. the first time i ran a timed one was 4 years ago and it took me over 13 minutes hahaha and i didn't even finish.

i was new to the state (arizona, its fricken hot here) and i hadn't done a lot of running so after the 2nd lap i couldnt really breathe but my coach (softball) was an ass and when i tried to tell him i was gasping for air and i was whispering cuz my voice wouldn't come out haha and he was all "WELL YOU'RE TALKING TO ME AREN'T YOU? YOU'RE FINE NOW FINISH THE DAMN MILE". so i tried another lap but i almost went to the emergency room! haha

then i got used to the weather and running since we ran everyday for at least 45 minutes in 110 degree weather. now i can run a mile in a little over 9 minutes. what about you?

In my amateur hay day i usually worked out at an 8 min. pace. In road races i think the best i ever averaged was 6:25 in a 10k.

I was average or below. If you are hitting 9 then you're doing quite well. For softball i wouldn't think you'd need a high speed/distance index. Nine min./mile for 45 mins. means you are hitting 5 miles per workout. If you can do that than your cardiovascular endurance it very good.

If, for shits and giggles, you do want to enhance speed, try what we used to call 'intervals'. Say you take a 3-miler one day. Maybe every 5-10 mins. and for a period not exceeding 1-2 mins., step up your pace to where you might even be hitting sub-8 mins... a sprint in fact. Then back down to workout pace until the next interval 5-10 mins. later.

thats a fast mile! im happy with 9 minutes haha i hate running. but that was for a class which i dont take anymore so im not worried about improving my time :)

damn thats a nice time, I wanna switch from sprinting to distance for track but based on what so many other people can do, I dont know if I can. To me finishing the several miles is an accomplishment, do you think I should work on speed first or a larger distance to build endurance?

It depends how big your legs/upper body is. Distance develops lean muscle, sprinters develop other muscle ( I forget what it's called)

If you want to see if you'd be good/able to win in distance, run an 800 with the distance team at your school & see how you come in. If you can keep up, you'd probably be able to win in the mile or 2 mile.

@niki The most common cross country program is LSD (long slow distance), mid distance day, Speed day, mid distance day, active rest (easy 3 miles or less), RACE / Timed-Trial, Rest.

That's the typical 7 day week of a school runner. Granted he's quite a bit progressed beyond average, he still likely holds a similar routine if he hasn't discovered a weak area holding him back (e. g. force, form or endurance).

I think most runners agree that racing is the best practice and timed trials are second after that. So scheduling those are the thing you should work on first ;) But hey, he's 30 seconds faster in the mile than me when I was in school, so if he has some other secret, I'm listening too. ^___^

Racing can be good or bad practice. You can be put in "developmental" races, which is the slow but not embarrassingly slow runners.. Or you can run against state record holders, who at the start of a 5k run like its a 1 mile race...

But I basically follow a program setup by my coach, he makes a workout plan for each individual runner.

I think last time it was 7 minutes flat or something like that, but that was a year ago and I've gotten a lot better since then. But I'm 100% a sprinter so I'm not great at miles.

haha same here! we would run miles and then we would have to do like 20 100m sprints. it was horrible... we dont even need all that running for softball! haha plus bleachers and what we liked to call "hell run"

I can't stand miles haha, in off season the track coaches make us run on the cross country trails and it's horrible, I can sprint extremely well but make me run 3 miles and I'm dead. Yeah you don't need to run that much for softball, I'm in track so obviously I run a lot every day but for softball I should think you only need to do a few sprints and a mile here and there.

yeah sprints dont bother me. it was doing them after the mile that killed me! there is no reason we needed to run like we did. base running is acceptable (obviously) but we need to get to each base in appx. 4 seconds and every girl could get there in 3-6 so it wasn't necessary. honestly, we ran and went to the weight room more than we actually were on the field practicing

I could run a mile in 6:30 a few years ago, when I was c 26. Now I'm 29, and I bet with my kung fu training I could run one in 5:30. Muhaha, little upstarts and pipsqueaks, thinking that we wither when we approach 30. I'll take you all on :P

Well! It depends on the type of run. If we are talking about my fastest mile then it's probably 7 and half minutes. My average time is about 9 minutes a mile. When I was training for my full marathon then I was running about 10 minutes a mile. The weather also plays an important factor on your time. Hot or cold weather can make it harder to run a fast mile.

those are good times. weather does make in impact for sure. same with altitude. i remember running for p. e. in like 7th grade and we lived in Los Alamos, New Mexico (literally in the mountains) and it was early winter so it was really difficult

Well it doesn't affect my running that much now other than my neck gets sore afterwards. Lifting anything is where I can barely do anything. I can lift 6 pounds and that's about it. That's the heaviest thing I've lifted in 2 years

Hardly. I got better after surgery but then I was working and going to school and overworked myself to where I basically passed out and I've been in bad shape ever since. It's not as horrible now but I have constant things that slow me down from getting better. At least now I can run and lift really light weights where before I would be on the verge of passing out from lifting something like less than a pound

thats terrible! things like that always happen though, you feel better so you work yourself to the limit and end up in bad condition again. at least its better than it was before though
