I had a brain tumour removed at the age of 16 and get straight A's in school. Will I ever regain pre-tumour brain functions?

Before my brain tumour math was my best subject. I was always the smartest kid in my class and always got 100% in everything without even trying. After my tumour I was the dumbest kid in my class but I was still in the gifted program which is for people score in the top 2% on 6-8 hour i. q. tests so I was the dumbest kid in the gifted program. Now I am university and getting straight A's but I think I work 6 times harder than you average student and I am only a part time student. I'm religious and I pray everyday for God to restore my brain and I think that he is but I don't know how long it will take. I've grown 3-6 inches in the last 9 years and I hit puberty about 17 years ago so medically speaking I'm not supposed to be growing anymore.

Hey, I think you are an amazing woman for going through all of that. I didn't have tumor and i still couldn't get A's and I didn't even work. Just keep pushing and you will do great things. Intelligence in itself means absolutely nothing. Adding value in some form to whatever you are studying counts a lot more. i always admire the lead singer from Roxette. That girl also survived a brain tumor and although she isn't as sparkly as she was before it, she still sounds amazing and I am seeing them next Tuesday. I appreciate her more than most musicians and am happy to go see such a strong woman. You can do it!!

No single answer because there are too many variables. Where the tumor was and how easy to get to was it determines how much brain tissue had to be damaged to get the tumor out. It was probably followed by chemo and radiation, either of which alone can further damage your brain. Often the radiation given is whole brain radiation and spine also, because any tumor tissue that broke free could travel in the cerebral spinal fluid throughout the brain and spine. That radiation doesn't even fully kick in for months. so there are just too many variables to know. Even your doctors cannot say with certainty.

Only God knows when and where. I'm glad that you are okay though! My dad had brain cancer and he didn't make it through. I am positive God has great plans for you! Keep the faith : )

A brain is an organ that is good in recovery... the other parts of the brain will take over functions from the damaged part. A friend of mine has one half of his brain that is almost "inoperative". All his knowlegde is still there and only his speech is somewhat difficult.
The secrets of our brain... we'll never understand them :-)
