When you spot someone, are you supposed to motivate them?

Anonymous
I remember about a month ago when I went to the gym
someone asked me to spot them, I usually go on levels where no one really is and lift by myself but I thought id explore more floors and more equipment, so I did.

keep in mind I'm 16, I'm just now old enough to come by myself and never spotted anyone.

I did my workout and when I was leaving this guy aporoached me and asked me to spot him
my first thought was run, but then I realized I was in a gym, and people do that.
I wanted to tell him I never spotted anyone and didn't really know how but it might've seem like I was making excuses so I said yeah and I went to spot him.

I gently held the weight with him just incase he dropped it, and counted the amount of reps he did for him each set
was I supposed to motivate him? because I had no idea how
the only reason I knew to count was because he started off counting and looked like he was struggling so I started counting for him
Yeah you're supposed to motivate them
You don't have to
