I used to brush my teeth with quite a hard toothbrush and I used to press a lot. Around the age of 26-27 my gums started receding around two of my bottom teeth. I thought I should clean my teeth better, so I started brushing harder. I asked dentists. I was told that it will likely keep going, the part of the tooth that was uncovered from the gums would get thinner and thinner until any warm/cold food would cause serious pain, so it would have to be drilled and a filling made. I got medical mouthwash and even special antibiotic. It kept getting worse, quite soon my gums around another tooth started receding. It was awful. Very slow but it was kind of scary. What the hell? Then another dentist mentioned in passing that it's possible to cause this by brushing my teeth too hard. Huh?
I instantly changed to the softest brush that was on the market and guess what, the degradation of my gums stopped. However, the damage done was more or less permanent. My gums recovered just a little tiny bit but not fully, and they don't seem like they'll recover any more.
Now I'm extremely happy that my gums stopped getting worse and worse but I feel extremely stupid for messing up some of my teeth by just brushing them too hard.
TL;DR: You can ruin your teeth with too much brushing.

Does it cause you pain or bleeding or whatnot? If not then I don't think it is unhealthy.
Seems a little compulsive maybe, and I would imagine that spending all that time brushing and flossing would cut down on time spend doing life and living stuff, but if it doesn't bother you, fill yer boots. (as long as all that scrubbing etc isn't causing pain or gums to bleed etc)
OMG THANK YOU. I FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE WHO DOES THE SAME THING AS ME. I have terrible ocd with teeth brushing. My family will yell at me for brushing for so long but i literally have to brush not only my teeth, but my tongue as well or I do not feel clean. I just can't brush for 2 minutes. I feel gross. We may be weird, but hey, we got clean teeth
To each their own. However, brushing your teeth for an hour is extremely bad for them, or for their enamel-coating.

Well, it kind of depends. I don't know if brushing for that long causes any damage or harms your teeth or mouth by any chance. Just don't apply a lot of pressure on your teeth with the tooth brush because you can tear your gums. I tore mine and it became sensitive. So just be careful
A good way to get premature thinning of the enamel layer with all this excessive brushing.
That's really not good for your teeth or gums. I'm surprised your dentist hasn't discussed this with you.
Hmmm have u been diagnosed with OCD? Sounds very odd to me that someone would do that...
well its depends on the pressure your using when you brush it could cause trauma to your gums
Uhm... don't you have things to do during the day lol? It's exceptionally weird.
That actually might hurt your gums. Depending on the motion you do while brushing your teeth and the pressure. Over time that could cause the gums to recede.
Its certainly overreacting. Usually a few minutes will do the job and brushing longer will have no extra effect. On the contrary, it may weaken your flesh.
It sounds pretty excessive. It sounds like am OCD-like behavior to me. Too much brushing can be bad for your gums.
brushing too long could maybe damage the gums but if it has done nothing thus far then enjoy.
That's excessive, borderline OCD-like, and something dentists really would NOT recommend.
That's seems a little excessive. I definitely go past the 2 minute standard time but one hour sounds like you'd be damaging your gums.
I think that's very obsessive and it's not good for your teeth or gums since dentists recommend brushing your teeth for about 2 minutes 2 to 3 times per day
Your dad did the same thing? Then its genetics related don't worry its normal lol
That's not healthy at all. You will wear down the enamel of your teeth.
Weird isn't the word!
And I simply can't think of one. smhNothing more i love in a woman than good hygiene and fresh smelling mouth.
yes, that's very unusual. You will end up killing so many epithelial cells lining insides of your mouth. That's not good if you overdo it.
That would wear down the enamel of your teeth over time brushing for that long. Lol
That's too long and might hurt your teeth in stead @@
