Tattoos? What is the pain like for first timers?

I want one on my wrist and one of my shoulder blade. Will it hurt? Compare it to something. It will be my first tattoo. Will I have to maintain it and how?

Shoulder blade will hurt like a mother fucker.

My first one the tattooist ended up numbing mine halfway through even though I didn't want to because he had hit where the tat passed over my pelvis, and the pain was excruciating.
But it's not like a super bad pain, like really bad cramps or jamming your finger in the door, it's more like when you get pinched, but a lot harder, and continuosly, in the same spot, over and over and over, but a LOT sharper than any pinch you've recieved before.

Remember to breathe! The tattooist will get annoyed with you if you hold your breath. And if you move. And if you talk. And if the person holding your hand is too close to him...

I think my tattooist was a bit of a grump honestly, but he did a damn good job considering.

My advice, do not numb your first tattoo. You want to be able to take that pain into consideration for when you start thinking about your second tat (which you will, it's inevitable the whole thing is addictive regardless of pain)

If the pain gets too bad, you can numb it halfway through, it's mostly effective, but doesn't numb completely, and you will likely need to do two sessions, depending on the size of your tat. Mine was abotu the size of my palm and I managed to get through that in one sesh, it took three and a half hours. Most people can last three hours max, my tattooist said I was in between the average pain tolerance and the 'freaks' as he called them. He also said, despite my ability to stand it for so long, that I was one of the most sensitive people he's ever tatood.

Well... mostly get through. I need to go back in when I can afford to do do some touch ups, fix where he couldn't quite complete (shade as dark as he wanted) because I had become hyper sensitive despite the numbing cream and it was becoming increasingly difficult for me to not start shaking uncontrollably. (which was only part due to the tat, I shake all the time, I'm like a small dog, just never stop shaking)

I did some research. Some people said it made it worse because it made their endorphins kick in. My guess is that they took aspirin. Aspirin is a blood thinner and made it hurt more. Others said it made the pain more bearable and helped with the swelling. If you do take pain killers, take ibuprofens or Advil. Also bring sugary candies and sugary juice drinks to help when your blood sugar goes down. It'd be a good idea to eat something sugary before. You should also consider taking muscle relaxers.

No, but I want to get quite a few. I'm in college but I still live with my parents. They'd be pissed if I got a tattoo. I'm coming up with a plan on how I can move out and be 100% independent in two years, I'll probably get a tattoo about a year of being on my own.

@heavenlyhannah breast tissue and the ribs are extremely sensitive, it may just so bad you could pass out.

Of course it will hurt, you can ask them to apply cream which helps reducing the pain. It's hard to compare it with other things, but the first lines will hurt most and then after few minutes your body will find it annoying more than it's painful. Just like everything else that people think it's gonna hurt like you are going to die, none of is true. There will be pain, but it's manageable plus you can ask them like i said for some cream that they should have in case some people are too sensitive.

It depends where you get it, I got my tattoo recently and it didn't hurt as much as I thought. Planning to get a 2nd one soon haha.

Shoulder blade will hurt, with the wrist the outline is sharp but the shading is fine. The first 10min are the worse then it sort of dulls out to a irritating scratch with the occasional sharp bit.
I wouldn't recommend the lydocaine cream - depending on the type and how your skin absorbs cream it could ruin the end result of your tattoo. And, it's a tattoo - it's meant to hurt, it's the biggest part of the experience!

Minimal pain. More annoying than anything. Like an itch u can't scratch...
Lotion, not lots of sun, no chlorine, moisturize!!! Dont scratch it...

Tattoos are tacky and so mainstream. Its practically uniform to get ink.
