Your first mistake is your measure for "success". Remember, muscle weighs more than fat so going solely by weight is bad. Instead, go by inches lost.
Next, you have to ensure you have "30 pounds" (of fat) to lose. Like I said, muscle weighs more than fat. So if you've been working out at all in those 3 years you may have gained weight from muscle (you don't want to lose that).
Now, how healthy are you eating? What you eat has a HUGE impact on your fitness and overall health. Do some googling on healthy nutrition and meal plans to find helpful advice and tips. There are thousands of free sites available with this information.
Lastly, you need to develop an exercise plan and stick to it. If you're unsure how to exercise then do some googling on it as well and again you will find thousands of free sites giving you ideas for workouts both inside and out of a gym. If you want to take it up a level consider hiring some sessions with a personal trainer at a local gym. They can develop an exercise plan specifically for you and your goals.
