Yes, I have had a lumbar puncture. No, I was not sedated. They numbed the area with lidocaine. It did hurt a little bit when they pushed the needle in deeper. Afterwards, I had to lay on my back for 20 minutes to prevent getting a headache. The second time I had cerberal spinal fluid pulled was after I had a VP shunt implanted in my brain. They just tapped the valve on my shunt in my scalp. No pain at all.

no but I would recommend being sedated in some way for anything like that. If anything goes wrong, you could be in a world of pain, while they fix it. It's not that scary, but it can be THAT painful. 😲
Like me, when I had surgery to remove a "pretty big lump" on my back that they thought was just a surface thing... once they got in there, they ended up having to dig deep. That would have sucked to be awake for. lol

  Yelp esp bc my nerves re all F’d up I can feel nothing and sometimes it’s more Intense than normal and who knows now that would go. I have a spot in my back that burns when I out cold water in it

My wife had an epidural (which I realize isn't exactly the same as a spinal tap but they're very similar) for our first child. She had a local anesthetic prior to but not sedation.

  They are very similar! As far as puncture. I’m always shocked how readily people take the epidural I spent any any needles up in there but maybe in the pangs of labor it’s hard to notice?

  Great question! :) The local wasn't an issue and the initial insertion of the epidural wasn't either. But then the anesthesiologist moved it around and she said that was excruciating. :( She howled. Then the doctors started getting snarky with each other and, I confess, that was entertaining.

Well, from people I know had them done were told to hold very still, and they were awake, and I Imagine if one wants to be sedated they can be not too sure.

  Yeah it’s weird bc someone I know air she used to work as an assistant & she had to help hold pellet down but I looked it up and it said you can be sedated sooooo I don't know maybe things changed— she did this so long ago 🤔

As far as I know Spinal Tap is a band and if by 'sedated' you mean 'stoned' then yes, probably.

Usually you're not sedated, but just given a local anesthetic. Even so, it hurts.
