What the fuck is salmonella actually that common?

I had a cold, went into a building that was on fire, had my air pack take a shit, but I was in with a rookie crew, and they were making great progress and I didn't want to pull them out so like we were trained I stuck the hose inside of my coat but did not exit the building until they were low on air unlike our training.
That did not help the cause.
I got worse, saw a doctor, he gave me an antibiotic, but it wasn't strong enough.
It turns out I had pneumonia, and the antibiotic that I received wasn't strong enough to get rid of it.
I didn't present like I had pneumonia when I actually did.
I got worse, coughing jags, I looked and felt like crap, yet I was seeing a doctor.
Finally, I had a chest x-ray and they told me do not pass go, do not go home but go directly to the hospital.
Long story short I had fluid in my left lung, so after they ran the battery of cardiac tests to rule that out, I saw the surgeon late in the afternoon and he told me that I would be having surgery the next day, but he didn't know when, but it would be tomorrow.
That it when it hit me that I was pretty sick.
He cut me open from front to back and took out just shy of 2 liters of fluid out of my left lung.
I felt so much better after.
I had a tube in me to drain anything out, spent a week in the hospital, a few weeks off duty and then light duty for 6 months.
I can still after almost 20 years feel where they cut me open.
But no lasting effects.
I've had the vid, aka covid at least twice, no big deal, just like a cold, except for the quarantine after which sucked, but I get it, I didn't want to get the rest of who was left sick, we were pretty shorthanded as it was.

I went to my friend's engagement party and it was like a potluck. I got salmonella food poisoning and I was very sick for about 5 days.

thats lucky. salmonella can make you really sick for a long time.

Yep... Man was I sick. And it was VERY painful in the intestines. I called my friend to see if anyone else had got sick and he didn't hear of any other cases. But then again, he just might not have heard. Some people would consider it impolite to call and ask so they wouldn't call.

Both salmonella, gallbladder and a burst appendix have been the sickest. And all caused tons of unbearble pain.
