1 yIn my mind the phrase 'No pain no gain" translates to an ethos that achievement comes with hard work, commitment, and persistence that builds character. And it may not always be easy or comfortable. In general, I think that's true.
Yeah, you can spend $5 and win the lottery. But that's an extreme low probability. You're likely better off putting in the work to develop knowledge and skills and a work ethic.
Also, you probably won't get a ripped body laying on the couch eating ice cream and being depressed. You're gonna need some food discipline. And you're gonna have to work your body and get really sore for a while. Then you're gonna have to maintain the discipline and the work for the rest of your life.
But... if you do those things, you are generally rewarded with tangible evidence of success plus a sense of accomplishment that boosts your confidence.
So yeah, no pain no gain. Pain builds character.

1 yI disagree. If you lose a limb, you permanently become less physically able. And while you could argue that you might become mentally stronger due to the suffering you go through after, you could have become just as mentally strong before losing the limb.
A relationship that always feels draining isn't about growing. It's just toxic.
There are so many people who go through life gaining things due to their social circles without any pain. Either their parents hand them down businesses or generational wealth, or their friends help them out in ways that only benefit them.
"No pain, no gain" is just a quote/saying to make us feel better for our effort and suffering.10 Reply
1 ySometimes I don't always think that's a good idea. Like, especially if you're doing something that you REALLY shouldn't be doing. What I mean by that is if you have an injury of some sort, medical condition, etc. because sometimes you just need to relax your body & not overdo it or just let yourself heal first. Pain is what helps us tell when something is wrong and if you make it worse, there's going to be consequences to that-which might be even more pain.

u 1 yAgree. You can’t truly appreciate the good without the bad for comparison. No pain no gain doesn’t just refer to physical improvement, it refers to everything. Nothing good comes easily.

1 y100%. It might not be optimal but I always train to failure.
Some people say it messes up our nervous systems but they are thinking like scientists, not artists.
If you think like an artist, overcoming when your body wants to quit is poetry in motion. It should hurt every time we train. That's what makes it meaningful.
24 ReplyLike so. This is the poetic way. I don't care if it's "sub-optimal". Pain is where we learn things. This is psychology, this is art.
https://youtu.be/vMo4YG42qNkYou get a hernia from all that stress? No problem. We aren't living in the Middle Ages anymore. They can repair it. This is poetic way.
Every time you train you are fighting against a bear, for example. Bear doesn't say, "Okay, you're good now." It's gonna tear you apart if you quit. That is how to train. I don't care what scientific types say about sub-optimal, nervous system damage, yada yada. You are fighting a grizzly bear every time you step into the gym. That's the only way.
The goal is not to become the strongest man in the world. It's to endure the most pain possible that we can. Otherwise, how can we volunteer to get our heads slowly chopped off when a terrorist offers us to choose between the life of ourselves or child? We have to get used to that so that we're ready to make the right choice.

Yeah but I prefer gain with less pain and more brain. I think they call that something cringy like "work smarter not harder"

Sadly true...
Sadly yes, though if you take pain for something i don't consider it a gain, if i have to suffer for something it doesn't worth it. İ am a taker not a giver (hell only reason i am not a thief at this point is i am too young to go to jail)
10 ReplyPain is an excessive metric
The point of that statement is to say nothing is gained by sitting and doing nothing
And I do agree: proactivity is the only way forward20 Reply2.7K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. To a point yes. Though there comes a point where you can overdo it and then it becomes more detrimental then beneficial coming from someone who was a personal trainer.
The body can handle a lot but it does have it's breaking point.
