3 moI started out as a runner in high school and college. Indoor track (winter), outdoor track (spring), and cross country (fall). In the military the running served me well in an elite role that was intensely physical at times. My typical training was 55-60 miles per week. Endurance and stamina was more important than strength and size + bulk was a hindrance. Every pound of body weight meant more food and more water to carry and less endurance and stamina. It was a constant balance. I did a lot of bodyweight exercise because I could do it anywhere without equipment and it built ONLY functional strength, not vanity bulk.
I only got into resistance training and equipment in my 40's. My doctor kept telling me to cut back on the running because I was gonna destroy my hips and knees. I did cut back on my running to about 30 miles a week and diversify my workouts with mountain biking swimming, and a water rower. But, I still have zero damage in my hips and legs. I'm just different / lucky when it comes to my body.
Anyway, these days, for about the last 15 years. I just run about 22 miles per week and train with weights about 3 days a week 1.5 hours per session, mountain bike, use my water rower, swim, ski in winter, and backpack / climb. And I have to admit I've started training for vanity too. Bigger arms. More developed back, shoulders, and chest. I've shed muscle from my legs for a better balanced physique overall.
And I add new stuff to my resistance training occasionally to break up the boredom. My current infatuation is "farmers carries".

Farmers carries... sounds related to my job somehow...🤓

It could be. Grab one of those goats under each arm and walk 100 meters uphill and back down again. Repeat about 10 times. If the goats are not willing participants, fill 2 buckets with water or rocks and use that for weight. I use two 50lb dumbbells. It gets your calf muscles, upper leg, glutes/ass, back, shoulders, and forearms.

Ha!! That sounds challenging but quite fun. I'll have to give it a try when the goats misbehave!! Lol!

Anonymous(30-35)3 moAt first I was doing the typical gym bro stuff. "Working out" upper body. That's in quotes because I had no clue what I was doing but thought I did.
Got humbled by a girl with a build similar to what you'd expect of a stereotypical cheerleader or dancer. Basically she did not appear to have any developed arm or back muscle but her lower body was the type that would easily attract most men, both her legs and her ass.
She belted out 12 pull-ups while I couldn't even do one. She explained to me how pull-ups are not about arm strength but about incorporating lats, which I'd never thought to try. She then gave me her card and I realized she was a personal trainer. I took a chance and hired her. She had a program she dubbed "Train like a girl". Basically it is a trial run of her own workouts that she challenges guys to try to show that the workouts women do in the gym are intense.
I've been working out with her ever since. My workouts are more efficient. Also I've changed my training up a lot and have learned I actually enjoy working out my lower body more than my upper body.
My goals have also changed. Instead of simply looking jacked, I decided to try actually working out with the goal of training just like a girl trying to build the "hourglass" look most women crave and have found I enjoy this style of training better. My figure looks more feminine than the typical guy since I've focused more on lower body and mobility/flexibility, but I'm happier than ever.

3 moI'm currently doing full body weight lifting with no days off. Ask me in 6 months when the older me...

Me now Beats the shit out of the old me...

I used to do a split... push pull legs type of thing where I always skipped legs... never did any abs or arms... just compound lift shit. We'll see... my plan is to make the old me look like a fucking pussy that I turn into a cuck and make him pay to watch me bang his wife.

Honestly I think the present version of yourself looks great at the moment! Thank you for sharing!
u 3 moI wouldn’t say they’ve evolved, but I’ve had to adapt to my situation. Before kids I was attending the gym 3 days per week, each day a different routine - one day legs, one day back & core, one day arms. Now after having my 2nd baby 4 months ago, I work my exercise into their routines. I take my toddler for an hours walk once per day and pushing his stroller is a form of resistance training since we live around hills. I also carry my 4 month old on me for every walk, so that’s at least 7kg of weight training and he’s only getting heavier, so it’s good muscle building for my legs. I work out my core and back on a daily basis while dealing with both kids. And lifting both kids all day everyday works out my arms.

3 moYeah definitely. My high school workouts were the most intense and always followed by raw eggs or protein shake. I did some crazy stuff back then. Behind the back clapping push ups, muscle ups, handstand pushups, human flags. I was pretty damn fit back then. And I still am... but I'm more chill now. My knees can't handle high impact stuff as much as in the past.
I just stick to a minimum of 50 decline push-ups a day, and depending on how I feel I'll add some situps, or handstand pushups. Some days when I'm feeling motivated, I'll do 50 decline push-ups every hour I'm up. In the winter, I kinda hibernate when it comes to cardio and in the summer, my cardio is hiking and/or kicking the ball around.10 Reply

3 moI like it. But I dont like doing it, ya feel? Lol im west coast and we smoke, so we like to snack dammit 😅 but we get shnit done too eh? You have to be patient with yourself and develop a routine that works for your rhythm. Like I mean anything new requires consistency and tbat can become mega annoying lol right? But for real, you have to figure out something.
If you're going bonkers and and nose losing anything or gaining... have a closer look at your intake.
I always says you can't put lipstick on a pig!
Enjoy it.10 Reply
3 moI went at it hard. Then one day asked myself what am I doing this for... once I liked how I looked, I didn't enjoy it as much anymore.
Now instead of lifting weights I find work that is that. I still like to jog because my mind just goes somewhere else when I do and after im high.
Over time my hard-core work out routine turned into only when I enjoy it.10 Reply4.9K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I started working out in 9th grade. I started mostly to get big so other kids would not pick on me. When i went to college I trained to play Rugby. I began to run a lot. A few years later I got started running marathons and became interested in fitness. I did this for a few years but the injuries piled up and i could not continue.
By the time I was in my 40s I was trying to stay in shape and retain my strength and endurance.
now I just try to keep up/

u 3 mointeresting that you ask...
been into sports pretty much all my life... but just this week, I decided to finally switch it up a bit, and have started to workout for the "first time ever" lol11 Reply- 3 mo
by the way... calisthenics is going to be the main thing I'll go with
it should be both, fun and interesting
I started working out regularly in 2020. Since I was not in good shape when I first started, my heart rate would go REALLY high. Almost dangerously high. Now, six years later, my heart rate still gets up there, but not as high as it did in 2020.

Anonymous(45 Plus)3 moIn my mind my body is unbreakable. In reality my body has told me in recent years, "no I'm not"!🤬😂 I've had to learn how to adapt to push myself with limits. Because staying in the game is much more important than being the best in the game at some point.
