"Can you eat chicken?"
"Wow, no meat?!?!?!? What do you eat?"
I am a vegetarian and I run into these all the time, it gets super annoying how people do not know how to distinguish meat from everything else.
No, I more get the, "BLARG WE'RE MADE TO EAT MEAT YOU"RE SOT STUPID SLDKFJSDOSHDSGJ:L!" people. Which I find far more annoying.
As for the people who ask what you eat? It's a very valid question because not only are there several different types of vegetarian and vegan but there are also exceptions to the rule here and there.
Total Vegetarians eat only plant food. They do not eat any animal foods, including fish, eggs, dairy products, and honey.
Vegans not only omit all animal products from their diets, but they also eliminate them from the rest of their life. Vegans use nothing from animals, such as leather, wool, and silk.
Lacto-Vegetarians will include dairy products into their diet of plant food.
Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarians eat both eggs and dairy products.
Pesco-Vegetarians include fish into their diets.
Pollo-Vegetarians eat poultry, such as chicken, turkey, and duck.
So unless you specify with one of those and explain they have every right to ask. Yes chicken is a meat but some people still eat it for reasons X Y and Z. You can't get angry at people for wondering how you do it, it's an impressive feat for most. I feel proud when people are like "Shit what do you eat?" It shows a bit of strength of will that not every one has. Then again I never really ate meat anyway so it's not that impressive.
Also there's a lot of nutrients people don't think you can get from non-meat- things like iron. I'm slowly coming off my vegetarianism and I'm still anemic as I have been for the entire ten years I didn't eat meat. Also, if you're vegan- protein?! People just don't know the food groups and qualities as food as well as you and vegans to so they ask. I like when people question me it makes it interesting and shows they're really invested in getting to know me, or interested in it, not just haughty or rude.
So trust me, if you haven't run into the a**holes yet you're living the good life. Or at least, the ass holes who won't back down and just continue criticizing you no matter what you say. They're out there, and they're annoying.
Well Said.
I can distinguish meat from everything else, yet I still don't know what you people eat. There is something about vegetarians that annoys me. Farmed Cows, sheep, goats and chickens would die out in the millions and possible extinction if humans stopped eating them, we have farmed them for so many thousands of years that they would not survive without us in the wild. Perhaps in the long run this is a good thing, I don't know. In the wild, animals such as these would live their lives in constant stress and fear from predators and would have been chased down, ripped apart and eaten alive, in youth, old age or ill health. Now their lives are peaceful and stress-less, and we kill them in the most humane and painless way possible, (halal could use an update though). The animals we keep, chickens for instance certainly need an upgraded existence, but the most moral thing to do would be to continually try to enhance their living experience of these animals before we eat them, and I think that's what we try to do or at least I only buy meat from certified sources.
If you literally don't like meat, fair enough. But moral vegetarianism is just annoying. But anyway, yeah, what do you people eat?
Every thing that isn't meat. I assume your diet doesn't consist of ONLY meat so it should not be that hard.
Meat includes - fish, poultry (birds), red meat (mammals).
My diet does consist of other things than meat, but none of those things I would eat on their own without meat. Potato, broccoli, lettuce, tomato. It doesn't seem like eating in my opinion, just an assortment of random veg.
Some people make the distinction between flesh, fowl, and fish.
Others just label anything protein that came from a living creature "Meat" as a generic term.
Until you know what level of English they are dealing with, you can't just assume they'll know what you mean by "Vegetarian".
After all, there are plenty (I've met them) people who call themselves vegetarians, and still eat fish. Or fowl. Or both.
I have heard people who claim to be vegetarian and eat fish but not fowl.
I've met many in France. A lot of "vegetarian" dishes in French restaurants contain chicken.
Oh OK. That is pretty interesting, I must ask are you from Europe?
Aye.
People have a difficult time distinguishing between Vegan and Vegetarians and Atheists and Agnostics. I'm not any of those but more of a pastaholic. I have some meat but not nearly as much as others I know.

Yes, all the time. The other day I had someone who kept asking me whether I ate chicken and seafood, and I told them no. Then they asked me whether I'd try a prawn, I was just like what the hell, I said I eat NO meat at all. Its funny how they hate when vegetarians lecture them, which I doubt happens that much, but then they try and lecture us and change our views, or try to get us to eat meat. It makes me very uncomfortable to have to debate my choice of being a vegetarian with people, its almost like they think if they make a valid point against it that I'm going to just change my choice. I also hate having to explain to people what I eat, its not like being a vegetarian is that unusual really.
I know it's like "do birds and fish grow on trees?" Seriously it's weird how people do not know what meat is.
i have a friend who has been a vegetarian her whole life and she asks questions that seem dumb to non-vegetarians (does fish, chicken, and beef taste the same? do you eat the fat?), but to her she is just curious and doesn't really know. it goes the same for non-vegetarians asking questions to vegetarians...its only curiosity and lack of knowledge...
it is annoying. I can't question their food choice so I don't see why they question mine. at first I didn't mind answering, but now...it's been 3 years and I still get those questions over and over...it's annoying
Urgh yes. They're all like "hhrr what do you eat then?" um food you moron haha
