Trending & News The general consensus among people who actively use supplements is that if muscle gain is your goal you should consume whey isolate twice a day: pre and post workout, and casein protein right before bed. However many common protein shake mix brands such as Myofusion are whey/casein blends, which is a more affordable alternative since it's an all purpose protein. pre, post, bedtime with those. Some people choose to take whey in the morning upon waking as well, however it's not protein your body needs when you wake up but carbs.
Whole food sources are always better than protein shake mixes. I only recommend protein shake mixes to people in my situation, I go straight to the gym from work and because I commute by bus it takes me another hour or two to get home from the gym sometimes, so I can't eat a proper post workout meal. I use Myofusion Probiotic series 2x a day, pre and post workout. for my before bed protein, I prefer to use whole food sources of casein which is anything made from dairy curd (cottage cheese is the best source).
There are only two supplements I would call "must-haves" by people who are looking to gain muscle and are active enough to make use of it: creatine and a good pre workout formula. Everything else you might need is better obtained from real food, including protein
My brother uses Muscle Milk, seems to work for him. But I don't think you really need supplements to get what you want. Having an effective workout routine and eating right are the main components for getting what you want. But yea, Muscle Milk I've heard is decent.
I'm not sure of what you are trying to achieve here, but my boyfriend who is a bodybuilder drinks protein/energy drinks before, during and after to get as much out of the work out as possible.
He also eats like a horse. And I'm not kidding, he seriously eats A LOT!

Protein supplements are literally nothing but expensive poo. This is what the body turns excess protein into. Eating food with protein is enough. The guys who claim to bulk up with magic powders take steroids.
I wouldn't call them expensive poo, but I would certainly say whole food sources are better. IMO they are only really useful for people who are unable to go straight home from the gym to cook up or eat a proper post workout meal.
There was an interesting article in the NT TImes on several heart attacks in people using some of these drugs.
I use muscle milk
