What is with people showing up super late to an event?

We had a 12-3 event yesterday, and there were people showing up not that long before it ended. Why even come at that point?

I was invited to a church birthday party when my cousin and uncle and aunt were visiting from America years ago and I told my uncle I ignored the invitation and told the host I had plans with family. My uncle said I should at least make a 20 minute appearance because its rude to reject an invitation, but I said, no, I see my church every week and I see my American relatives once a year so I would not go to the party I was invited to.

Some people might be too busy to attend a party but don't want the bad reputation of not appearing at an event they were invited to, so they show up last minute, just so they can tell their social circle they showed up.
