Do you celebrate Boxing Day?

Question

In the United States, December 26 (or 26th December) is considered "the day after Christmas" while in other countries (UK, for example), it's called "Boxing Day", which is described here:

Yes, in Canada, December 26th is known as Boxing Day, and it is a federal public holiday. It did stem from the history outline in the article, but now it’s pretty much our version of Black Friday, although we are also starting to do Black Friday here as well.

Boxing Day is much crazier, in my opinion. The mall pictured in the article, Eaton Centre right here in Toronto, should absolutely be avoided at all costs in the couple of days leading up to Christmas, and especially on Boxing Day. Unless you have some kind of death wish and want to be squished by a crowd just to get a deal on something that will be on sale all week long.

It's also known as St Stephens day here.

There used to be a tradition of “holly-beating” or “holming.” Young men and boys would beat the unprotected arms of young females with holly branches until they bled. In some areas it was the legs that were beaten. In others, it was the custom for the last person to get out of bed in the morning to be beaten with sprigs of holly.

That's died out now but there a lot of group sea swims around the country that have become a modern tradition

I dont celebrate it for say. Not really sure how. But i do make a list of things i need and join the festivities. Like going to Best Buy and indulging in this capital gathering of hundreds of blood thirsty mammals fighting for the last television box just to realize they have more in a different isle. Its also a good social experience about people telling you the specs of their new found device because standing silently in line for an hour or so does not satisfy

I never shop on Boxing Day cause I don’t have the patience to line up in large crowds and fight for parking for a $10.00 discount on something I don’t need but I got books on kindle that were over 90% off.

I believe here in the US, we celebrate that the day after Thanksgiving as “black friday” but its now a 1-2 week long thing. I liked it as a kid but not something i care for as an adult

Thank you for the information. Here December 26 is just the day after Christmas as you said (USA). No one ever mentions Boxing Day. As a little girl I remember the first time I saw it on the calendar, my mom and aunts were getting all the stuff they didn't want ready to return and thinking, "Oh that means it's the day everyone puts what they don't want back in the box to go back to the store." Hence "Boxing" day made scence at the time.

I’m in Canada, so yes we as a country celebrate Boxing Day, but I celebrate Boxing Day or week in my warm house with a hot cup of coffee or margarita in a t-shirt and thong shopping online

I don't. That is celebrated in England, on the 26th. Or at least in the UK (Wales, Scotland, England and Ireland). I knew about this from an English boyfriend I once had.
