How do people express gratitude?

Today is my birthday and the first person WHO gave me a present (a box of chocolates) and wished me Happy Birthday was my instructor. When we finished the lesson and were saying 'goodbye' I gave him a kiss on the cheek as a form of 'thank you'. How do you thank people for a sweet gesture?

In reply to how I thank people I do with saying thank you or with a hug or a kiss on the cheek depending on who it is. If it's a guy I would say thank you with a hand shake.
