1. Don't panic!
I know it's a stressful time, but try to keep your mind focused.
2. Isolate your vehicle
If possible, try to get your car off of the road and out of the way of oncoming traffic. Other drivers may not be paying the attention they should (texting, doing makeup, etc.) and create a far worse situation.
3. Assess the situation
Before you call anyone, take a look yourself. See if there are physical defects around the car or under the hood. This can help a lot if you don't have a trusted mechanic.
4. Call for assistance
If it's an issue that you can't fix yourself, call friends and family before calling for a tow. Someone you know could come out and help get you back on the road.
5. Research your mechanic
If no one you know is able to help, call for a tow. They only need the description of your car and the location. Time to get on your phone and research mechanics in the area and possibly see reviews. If the tow company wants a destination address, tell them you will call back.
