No one likes to be told that their dog is fat. But that doesn't mean you should just ignore it. If you have a fat dog, you may know why. But for those who are puzzled, here's what you may be doing wrong:
1. "Oh, chubby animals are so cute!"

Who doesn't love to hug a big fat, lovable dog? (well, I don't, but I'm weird). People think fat things are cute for some reason. But people forget about the things that aren't so cute, like dying early and horribly damaged knees.
2. Did you do your research?

Another problem is that people don't know how much their dogs should weigh, so they don't even realize their dog is fat. That first dog, oh yes, he is fat.
3. Allowing your dog to be lazy.

Imagine if humans had to work for every meal they eat. If you had to run to the store (like, on your feet) every time you needed to eat. Most people would probably either work off what they eat, or eat less because they are too lazy to get the food. Your dog should not be sitting or laying down while eating. You should not have to bring the food to your dog. If he's hungry, he can walk over and stand and eat his food. If your dog is too fat to get up the stairs or off the couch, well, he'll do it if he's hungry enough. Don't pick him up, make him walk.
3. For Pete's sake, you bought the dog, play with it!

And you can't use time as an excuse. You can go to bed ten minutes later to play fetch with your dog. If you have time to sit and scroll through social media, you have time to take a walk. If it's cold wear a coat. Dog won't chase a ball? Throw kibble.
4. NO Table scraps!

As in NONE, at all. Ever. Your dog gets dog food. Nothing should be given to the dog that isn't a fruit or a vegetable. Buy dog treats. Give kibble as treats. But no table scraps. If you can't handle the begging, put your dog in a crate, in another room, or teach it to sit or lay quietly out of the way while you are eating. Don't be a softie. Show some tough love.
