The deep dark ocean is one of many things that freak me out and the creatures living in it don't help much. I've kind of fallen down a rabbit hole of discovery and can't get out.
1. Giant Isopod
This creature is pretty much a gigantic sea roach. Besides being able to make most cringe and itch at the same time they don't do much else besides eat the bodies of fallen dead sea creatures.
Did I get to mention their underside is what nightmares are made of?
2. Predatory Tunicate
These things are pretty much underwater Venus flytraps. They're simultaneous hermaphrodites which means they produce eggs and sperm. If conditions are bad enough they can produce by themselves. I feel like they belong in a Super Mario underwater level.
3. Barrel-Eye Fish
This fish has a transparent head and highly sensitive eyes. When they're caught in nets the transparent part of their heads are destroyed simply because they're so fragile. They're capable of filtering out sunlight to spot the bioluminescence of its favorite food. Besides being extremely odd looking they're one of the least scary on the list.
4. Textile Cone Snail
Just when I was convinced all snails are peaceful insignificant creatures. This snail has a microscopic needle into their prey that's also dangerous to humans and is powerful enough to kill.
5. Anglerfish
Male anglerfish are small, worthless, and starving little creatures, his only talent is having a great sense of smell which he'll use to eventually find a female. The female anglerfish is a vicious predator that uses her glowing spine to lure prey and has an expandable jaw and elastic stomach. The mating process is an absolute mess too. The male anglerfish bites the female and fuses his face to her body until he's nothing more than a pair of testicles. Fun times.
6. Gulper Eel
Yay, an eel with the mouth of a pelican because that's not off putting what so ever. Its tail has a bunch of tentacles that flow pink to attract prey. So, if you're stuck at the bottom of the ocean avoid all pink and red lights.
7. Bobbit Worms
This thing's body is prettier than my nail polish. These demonic creatures can be up to 9 feet long and are no joke. They don't have eyes or a brain but that doesn't stop it from eating large fish, octopus, and spiky venomous things.
8. Goblin Shark
Would you have a heart attack if you were in the deeps sea and ran into this thing? I would. Their noses are filled with electroreceptors that pick up tiny electrical fields of their prey, and their jaws expand forward taking in any passing prey.
9. Frilled Shark
Due to remaining unchanged for 80 million years the Frilled Shark is known as a living fossil. Its mouth is lined with 25 rows of backward facing teeth. Its digestive system expands similar to a snake so that it can take in larger prey. You definitely don't want to run into this thing.
10. Promachoteuthis
This creepy thing is a one of a kind found in 1971. It doesn't even have an official common name. Although, it appears to have a mouth full of teeth those are actually folds of soft tissue that are more similar to lips.
Enjoy the nightmares! 😘
