How were you disciplined as a child?

Question

This may be controversial but this topic interests me. 

The accepted degree of discipline is varies in each cultures and societies. So how were you disciplined by your parents?
 
Were you grounded? Belted? Spanked? Made to kneel on salt or grains of rice? Given a ban on something like tv or video games?

I caught a couple beat downs from mom, haha. Not the usual, but she'd go off the deep end about every year and half, two years, and that would be part of the process. She didn't habitually drink, but she'd fall off the wagon sometimes, and she can't metabolize alcohol properly, so she'd go from 0 to bombed in half a vodka tonic. That's when it would usually happen, because she'd drink if she got upset or overwhelmed by something.

I'd never claim I was a "beaten" child though, I think people have kind of gone soft about that. Obviously I don't endorse kicking the shit out of a little kid, but I can tell you from my own perspective, a little pain/threat of pain was the ONLY way to reach me, I'd laugh off any words or non-physical punishment. Usually, when I was younger, I just got spanked with a wooden spoon or the backside of a hairbrush. She used the bristle side of the brush once and drew blood, and she felt bad, but I loved it, she kissed my ass for a long time over it, so it was totally worth the temporary pain, haha. But the usual method was the spoon, brush, or an open hand to the ass or (more lightly) the face. You gotta understand my parents were born in the 1930s, the last generation of badasses in America. So by that standard they went real easy on me.

Only time it went over the line in my book was when I was about 16. I got my report card, which was usually the source of my troubles. Mom wanted a nerd, but she got a jock, and that caused a lot of friction. So I'm sitting there at the kitchen table getting bitched at, and i had heard enough and dismissively was like "whatever", and defiantly laid my head down in my arms. I got my head yanked up by the hair, and with the other hand she came across and pimp-slapped the SHIT out of me, haha. Top 3 nosebleed of my life. Absolutely blew my shit up. That was too far, but it's also not like I wasn't taunting her.

It's all good though, I'm no worse for wear. I had a pretty good childhood, all considered👍

My parents would tell me what I did wrong, send me to my room, take away toys/computers (happened pretty rarely though), send me to the corner to think about what I had done, and veeeeery rarely would they sometimes tug at my hair if I was being completely out of control. I think I've been grounded a couple of times. That's it, I think. They have never belted/spanked/hit me, and I'm thankful for that. I don't think it's ok to get physical with your child to the point where you spank/hit them or in general cause them physical harm just to teach them a lesson.
The only thing I'm ok with is lightly tapping/smacking a kid's hand if they're reaching for something they shouldn't reach. For instance, when I was at my cousin's place and she was cooking some lunch for her daughter, her daughter was playing very closely next to her. Then she decided to stand up and reach her hand up to the hot frying pan/stove. That could have ended up being a dangerous situation, so my cousin gently slapped her hand away and told her not to do that because it's hot. Similarly, a child could reach for food/expensive things/things that they in general shouldn't touch because of safety/hygienic reasons. In those instances I think it's ok to slap their hand (s) away. Otherwise, I'm 100% against it.

it depended on my age, the thing i did, and if i tried to hide it...
when i was old enough that i not only knew the rule, but understood it, the punishments got worse if i did it. for example, no food in the bedrooms was the rule, if i had a snack in my backpack, unopened, and my dad saw it, he would ask me about it, if i lied and said i didn't know what he was talking about, i would be spanked and grounded from my books except for school, a very effective punishment for me, and he would take the snack away, if i admitted i got a snack from school, and forgot about it, i would be reminded of the rule, and it would be taken to the kitchen, where i could have it another time. one time, i deliberately hid a snack, forgot about it, and it attracted pests, i tried to cover up my choice and failed, i was belted that time, the only time he ever did that, he hit me twice, once for lying, and once for not following the rules, he explained to me before and after exactly why he did it, and so i understood, and i don't hate him for it.

My parents did all of the above. My parents have beaten me with a pipe, with a broom stick, belt, a clothes rack until it broke in half and cut my skin. I got beaten mostly in my legs, and also my hands partly to block the lash. My finger got broken for doing that. My dad punched me in the face a few times. Did I deserve that? No. But I didn't turn out to be a terrible kid and amazing person due to myself and not them. But I love my parents cause they love me unconditionally and support me through thick and thin. I stopped getting beaten at the age of 13 or 14. But got punched in the face from my dad at rare times in my teens. Honestly they never needed to do that cause I was a good kid and all they had to do was communicate with me better and show that they were understanding and open minded.

My mother was the same way in the sense of "physical, emotional and verbal abuse" and unlike most people, I'm not going to turn the other cheek and forgive her. Hell I never will/could even if I wanted to because I HATE HER no joke >>. She is everything that I hate in a woman + she use to take her anger out on us with extension cords and paddles etc "she gave no fucks about the pain" that we were in. she just wanted to vent her anger I guess.

"She's a great, caring person," yet she did all those things to you? sounds like when a girl says, "he beats me because he loves me" yea I'm sure he does and that explains that black eye of yours right?". But unlike my mother yours actually helped you out in life it seems. Mine on the other hand did absolutely nothing besides piss me off every other day

So no your mom actions weren't justified and anyone that thinks they were has "beaten dog syndrome." thats the only way that I could see it.

A combination of things. If I misbehaved, I would get one warning. My mom would pull me aside and firmly talk to me and say that I needed to stop whatever it was I was doing. If I continued to misbehave, I would get things taken away (like, no TV for a week, no computer access, or something like that). And then if I still didn't act right, I would get a spanking, only on my butt though. My parents really only had to spank me maybe two or three times that I can remember. I usually straightened up after the first warning.

They took away my computer more times than I can count. They never hit me, but they did lecture me a lot. Whenever I threw a tantrum (mind you, I was 7 and younger), they would pull me to the side, look me in the eye and tell me to never do that again. That was enough to scare me into submission. They did it consistently, so I learned not to do it anymore.

They were very lenient with other things. They told me the facts about drugs, smoking, sex etc and I was allowed to choose what I did. So I never rebelled and therefore never did those things. I never smoked, never tried drugs, never drank, never went out past my curfew, never dressed inappropriately. I'm now very close with my parents because they never hit me and instead treated me like a person.

All of the above. I mostly got hit with the belt but as I got older, I got used to it really. I've had my face clawed at, hair pulled and got bruises and all but personally it has helped me.

I love my parents and can honestly say thank fuck for what they did because I might have ended up being a little shit and on 16 and pregnant or something..

Generally... my parents lectured me a bit. Sometimes they grounded me (but they always forgot, so I barely even count that). They sent me to my room a lot, but for a bookworm with a vivid imagination, that really wasn't punishment. And time-out was common. But again, vivid imagination. I didn't care that I was in a corner, my mind was entertaining enough.

In retrospect, I'm surprised they didn't resort to spanking or anything, since nothing else actually worked on me. That must've been irritating.

Not bragging, I have never been spanked nor scolded. My parents never got angry at me. I was a sincere and disciplined kid. I was not restricted from anything. I knew that what's right and what's wrong, my limits and I was not that naughty. Literally, I was shy.
I also won prizes in nursery and kindergarten for the most disciplined student.

All of the above. But not to a degree where I feel damaged from it. I have issues but I feel that is more so from the way I was treated and talked to. I think punishment has its place and even a spanking is appropriate for the right reason but other means should be used before it comes to that. And always with an explanation.

My parents never laid a hand on any of us because they thought that was ineffective. That's how both of them were punished when they were kids and I think it just turned them off of corporal punishment.

They either verbally scolded us or grounded us. However, my grandparents used to spank us like no tomorrow if we misbehaved in front of them.

Spanking and the belt after I was 10 or so. Actually the belt was a switch from outside.
I was grounded and had something taken away when I got older. But the switch was only used when I did really wrong.

Corporal punishment works well I wouldn't belt my kids but you have to punish them where they get the message, they need to learn their actions have consequences, but you must also use the "let the punishment fit the crime" saying, if my kid stole something they would have to repay the victim twice the items worth, if they didn't clean their room then no tv till it got clean, if they refused to eat dinner... I am picky I don't blame them, I'd say it depends on the action of offense.

Not that it really did any effect. Reason is more persuasive than either violence or just whatever grounding is supposed to do.

But I think option C) is insane and I'd gladly cut some fingers off from whoever actually does that to their kids, because they don't deserve anything better than that.

there were different measures depending on how bad the thing i´ve done was.
small things: verbal scold
medium things: verbal scold+ deprivation of my favourite activities
bad things: verbal scold+ grounded
really bad things: spanking + grounded + deprivation of my favourite activities

i think the scold was the worst part... i´d rater just be spanked for everything but i think this has a good upbringing value.

As for me? I wouldn't have the heart to put anyone through what j went through, let alone my kids.
