It's probably spiel, they're complimenting you to cosy up to you.

Hmm I don't think so because he mentioned it a lot of times, that's how he describes me and he also asked to see if his friend would agree with him. I don't think he refers it as a compliment. I think he said it as something neutral. Simply to describe them.
