It's more or less how I learned I got thrown into the pool first and got the hang of it the hard way then naturally I was sent to have swimming lessons afterwards.
it’s kinda funny when they do it to babies because they float but it’s also not a good idea to people who are old enough to be aware of what’s happening, panic arises and there’s a good chance it could end horrible.
The lifeguard had to jump in and get me, I lost consciousness and they had to call an ambulance to check and make sure I was okay. The kid who did it got suspended from school.
Some times it's ok in the learning environment when instructor is around and know what they are doing. Think of it more if as an ice breaker. Have you ever felt when you try to talk someone new and you feel super nervous and can't do it at all?
It was like that for me. When I went to learn swimming 🏊♂️ swimming 🏊♂️ I was not going in the pool. Then I would not put my face in water for breathing practice. Both happened on the same day. I was pushed in the pool and after a while pushed under water. It worked out ok for me that doesn't mean people should do it and it would by approved by everybody
@TheSpaceGnome not going under and staying afloat is the definition of swimming xD yeah pretty much every baby floats. adults not so much but everyone knows instinctively how to move their limbs in order not to go under.
Then again, the few times i gained weight, i still had trouble keeping my head above water while being still (unless holding on to something or using a life jacket)
@TheSpaceGnome it's different if it's a life or death situtiation tho. also all babies swim, cause their gphysiology basically doesn't allow them to go under.
Thrown in, pushed in, whatever. Its disrespectful. And i still dont know why you make it about age. I can swim but like someone else said, even throwing in an unsuspecting well talented swimmer will make them panic
There are two points, learning to swim and throwing/pushing in.
In terms of learning to swim and specific swimming lessons. If someone hasn't learnt to swim as a child, I'm less sympathetic about being thrown in as a method of teaching, sometimes you just have to jump in at the deep end (groan). After waiting, encouraging, cajoling someone who is mature enough to understand that water is a phobia, not really truly terrifying, there gets to a point where jumping or being pushed is irrelevant.
If this is at a random party then definitely, anyone who pushes someone in is in the wrong. You might not expect to swim at all and be fully dressed. At a swim party with inflatable floating obstacles where everyone is capable, the pool is deep enough and a lifeguard is present then I would expect to jump, fall, slip, bounce into the water. Being pushed in would be surprising in the moment but expected in general.
If they have learnt to swim then this question doesn't apply. They wouldn't be at lessons learning to swim. I do think in general, throwing in is bad.
I think people Should jump in when they feel ready. I find jumping in to be more fun than just swimming from wall to wall. When i jump in, i learn to push myself up

Afterwards? Good lord
Yeah strange turn of events.
I disagree with that 100%. Morally, philosophically, and scientifically.
And if I caught someone doing that on my shift, they would be thrown out.
Ooo are you a lifeguard 😍
@DizzyDesii Don't get too excited. I'm retired. Haha
Dammit i keep forgetting your age
@DizzyDesii Lol. It's okay.
I don't agree with this method either. I don't think it's a good idea.
Its definitely not

That's crazy. Why would anyone do that? It's assault, and could quite easily end up with the person drowning.
Sadly a lot of people down south do
Even if it is a good way to LEARN to swim (which is dubious at best), it's a GREAT way to traumatize them and make them hate swimming.
Definitely traumatize
I was thrown into the ocean as a kid so I'd learn lol
It did work, but I disagree with doing that.
Damn the ocean is worse than the pool! I hope the water was clear
Nope, not at all. When I was 12 I almost drowned underwater by some kid doing this to me at a water park field trip.
Dang this is so sad
The lifeguard had to jump in and get me, I lost consciousness and they had to call an ambulance to check and make sure I was okay. The kid who did it got suspended from school.
Holy smokes im glad you're alive
Yeah, me too.
As someone who experienced this when I was younger, it didn't help me one bit to learn haha so traumatic that I still remember that day hahah
Im sorry to hear that
No, I would say it isn't. That's how my Grandpa taught my mom and her brothers to swim.
Damn
Being thrown in the lake never helped me learn to swim. If anything it made me scared of water.
I agree
I love the simba gif, the first time I saw that video I choked on my drink xD
but ya it's a horrible way to teach and a good way to traumatize
🤣🤣
Just for everyone to enjoy ^^

Its a form of abuse to me. you are intentionally causing harm to a child, mental at the very least.
To anyone, child or not
yes, but most who are "taught to swim" tend to be children.

Not the same at all

I have had a fear of drowning since a near drowning experience so no I'm against 100%
Awww
@DizzyDesii I will go to a pool I'm able to walk but no swimming
when it did happen I was like 10-11 years old and my late mom
never believed me
My niece’s trashy uncle did that to her when she was 5. she's never gone bear a pool since. He robbed her of so much fun.
I hate he did that
I did too. He’s an ugly bum.
As someone who worked as a lifeguard and taught swimming lessons for years... this is a horrible way to try and teach someone to swim.
I agree
Well it's probably a traumatic thing to do to someone. But humans generally intuitively know what to do to stay afloat.
Hmmm okay
Did you know babies can swim already? We're born with the instinct.
Babies are usually born with the instinct to hold their breath. Swimming though requires practice, and not everyone floats.
@TheSpaceGnome not going under and staying afloat is the definition of swimming xD yeah pretty much every baby floats. adults not so much but everyone knows instinctively how to move their limbs in order not to go under.
I didn't float, and I had to be taught how to swim.
@TheSpaceGnome what age?
I think I learned to swim around age 9, but I had trouble floating long after that and still do.
if I stop moving I sink. not enough fat to be buoyant.
Then again, the few times i gained weight, i still had trouble keeping my head above water while being still (unless holding on to something or using a life jacket)
I can do laps in a pool though and stay afloat from inertia.
@TheSpaceGnome it's different if it's a life or death situtiation tho. also all babies swim, cause their gphysiology basically doesn't allow them to go under.
In a life or death situation I would not be staying still in deep water lol. Also I didn't float as a baby.
Hmm... I think everyone should know how to swim before they are 10, after that, I have no sympathy :)
Yea but what does age have to do with being thrown in
It is harder to throw them?
If they haven't learnt to swim by 10, I have no sympathy if they complain about being thrown in.
I wouldn't mind being thrown in... quite unlikely to happen though :)
Thrown in, pushed in, whatever. Its disrespectful. And i still dont know why you make it about age. I can swim but like someone else said, even throwing in an unsuspecting well talented swimmer will make them panic

I've not done proper swimming for years, only at a waterpark. I used to be great but these days I'm just unfit.
My neighbor did that to me when I was a kid. I think i was 8 years old. It was the last time I was in their pool.
My parents wouldve whooped his ass
When I told my parents about it my dad went over and spoke to him. It ended the Friendship
