What stereotypes do you face, that you don't like?

Stereotyping can simplify certain things.
I do also use stereotypes when like arguing, I use it in a general sense and try to not stereotype when it's about certain people in particular.



Personally like I'm turkish/kurdish, even tho I don't have much to do with both cultures besides my parents origin, I don't even "look" like a typical turkish woman. (Stereotyping lol)
But based on that, others assume that I am a Muslim. I'm not.
So therefore I have received weird comments or insults on the Muslim thing and the majority were Muslims themselves lol
Why I'm not acting right according to them and shit. It's just so annoying to me.

Or my German colleagues asking me about the religion, how Ramadan works, why I'm not fasting and I can't even answer most of their questions, cause I don't know much about the Muslim Religion myself lol

I no longer mind them at all when directed to me. It used to bother me when I first stepped foot in the US and so many people asked me if I knew martial arts on account of being half-Asian.

Then people in Japan would be amazed that I can eat the most exotic foods from Japan on account of being half-white when I'm born and raised in Japan originally! Then they might ask me if I like McDonald's or something like that being half-American.

I think I've just associated humor and silliness with it so much that it no longer bothers me. I got it twice as much being biracial and also having spent a lot of time traveling across the world. I made it a laughing matter rather than one I'm upset about.

I kind of separate categories for strangers now who talk to me like:

1) People who don't actually believe in stereotypes but tease. These don't offend me at all because I take it that they find as much silliness and inaccuracy with stereotypes as I do.

2) Curious but ignorant. They might not know much about my ethnicities and cultures and are programmed to think in terms of stereotypes but they have a genuine curiosity. These people don't offend me much at all; some have become my lifelong friends.

3) People who are hostile. These are the most challenging and require the most patience to turn into friends but I actually see the challenge as worthwhile. Yet I've succeeded a few times, including a school friend in the US who went from total hostility on account of me being from Japan and speaking awkward English to telling everyone around me who started doing the same that I'm cool and even watching my back.

4) People who don't even humorously entertain stereotypes at all and never bring them up. These people are the rarest and usually the most well-educated and most well-traveled throughout the world. My wife is one of them but they're a rarity in my experience (maybe more rare in my case being biracial and having grown up all over the place as well as being a dual-citizen to both Japan and the US).

Cheers! The way I look at it is that if the world is going to change for the better, it's one individual and one friendship at a time. If I want to disprove a stereotype, I figure it's best done in my case by showing rather than telling. Takes patience but I think it's the best thing I can do if I can be patient enough. :-D

Ayee I get that I’m also half Turkish. A lot of my co workers are Arab and the first question I get is are you religious? Followed by ‘oh I though you’d me Muslim’ like no I’m atheist and grew up in a catholic school and also half ukranian but I get why they would think that. And if they’re not Turkish or middle Easter at all they think all we eat is kebab all day lol


Seccond stereotype is the bodybuilder stereotype as I compete in bodybuilding. Usually along the lines of oh it’s super vain you do that. Not really.. you know the amount of discipline it requires? Also it helped my depression and ED and practically saved my life almost as well helping me meet a community of others. It’s not vain. Better then sitting at home doing nothing all day watching Netflix then they complain I spend hours at the gym so what?

I just had a new housemate moving in the shared house I live. He wears band tshirts and battle jacket, he is into black metal.
I am a big metalhead myself, but I don't dress as one, unless I'm going to a gig. As I like pink, I like flowery dresses.
The judgmental way he looked at me, when I told him I listen heavy metal... we are not going to be friends for sure.
But I frequently get this. Sometimes I get the kick out of it though. I turned up at the Cannibal Corpse gig in my cherry dress. That was fun. Practically everyone was staring at me. The security guard at the door asked if I knew what music they are going to play to check if I am at the right place.

Honestly white privilege is a false stereo type. But personally I hate the stereotype that some women put on confident men, as being self centered, arrogant or cocky. Like what's the alternative, would you rather us be insecure, with intimacy and trust issues?

A man can totally be humbles and genuine and confident. Accusing someone of being self centered is such a cheap copout... or excuse that easily can be used to had your own insecurities. I mean everyone is self centered to an extent, we all know how we think and feel about everything, we all know how the world around us affects us on a personal and daily bases... so to that extent we are all at the center of own universe. So who gets to decide when it crosses some line, or lacking in empathy or compassion of other people who do not account for themselves, their own insecurities or and contribution to the equation?

As a black guy, it's annoying when people assume negative intentions. I feel like I have to go out of my way to prove that I don't have bad intentions. More frequently &/or clearly than a lighter person would.

Stereotyping across the board is shit and dumb.

Being from Newcastle we tend to get it a fair bit within the UK, other areas do as well, some is humour, some less so.

GaG is full of stereotyping arseholes at times.

Apparently a single 1 inch tattoo on a part of your body not usually seen, will instantly make the person a slut and completely undateable.

the list is endless, from ethnicity, to sexuality, gender, religion even what you eat.

People assume im some raging satanist (both because i love metal music and religion wise im pagan). I live in an African nation, being fair skinned is naturally associated with being wealthy and rich so that is something constantly used against me, at farmers markets, shopping of any kind I always face inflated prices ciz they assume I do not speak the language, I get racially discriminated a lot, coz the idiots dont know what I am, I've been called Russian, Armenian, south American, Arab.
