It is sent to registered voters as a notice that you must appear a court to determine if you will sit on a potential jury. A lot of times they will not even call your number in if they have a large pool. Even if you do get called in, you may not be selected and can be let go from the responsibility during jury selection.

If you don't show up the first time, then you might get a chance to rescheduled for another date if you follow the procedure outlined by your county. If you don't do that and just ignore it, they can fine you up to several thousand dollars typically or put a warrant out for your arrest and incarcerate you.

So during that date window you are on call. If your number comes up that week then you need to show up. It is likely posted on the courts website who needs to show up each week on what day. Your country might also do automated phone calls as well.

A jury summons is a legal request from a court to fulfill your legal responsibility to attend a session where juries are assembled for trials. Do not ignore it, there are stiff legal penalties. Follow the instructions in the summons. You may end up sitting on a jury at a trial, though to be realistic and make sure the jury is unbiased, the court asks for probably 10 times the number if people to appear than they actually need in the jury. So don't be surprised if nothing really happens.

I was summoned to jury duty and I got out of it with a doctor's note. I had just had a major reconstructive hip surgery. Ever since they don't call me anymore. As a juror in my state of Virginia, they pay $30 a day. Some states even reimburse for mileage. Your employer must allow you to take time off for jury duty. Check out this link.
